Two things strike me funny about the above mentioned thread. I didn't want to mess up the format there, so I thought I would share my observations with the group in a separate thread.

1) The first thing I noticed was that the thread was started 4 years (and one week) ago and we are only up to 7019 as of this writing. That's an average of 33.58 separate entries per week. (We can round that up to 35 for the sake of easy calculation.)

From this date, at this current rate, it will take just over 28,370 weeks to get to 1 million.

That equals, as near as makes no difference, 550 years.

Ambitious bunch.


2) I wonder if DS Nav was prepared for 7012.. and if he was actually ready to pounce on it when it came around. Really... 11:24pm and he runs his Win7 build number? Hilarious, if planned. Absolutely spectacular to catch it on the fly. Well done, sir.. well done indeed.

I think the pace has increased and as more members join the number will go faster. I started about 6 months ago and it was at 4824 (my first post on that thread). Still this will be a legacy carried on by future members of DS!!

Here's a breakdown yr to yr (Jan 26th 9p)
2010-2011 -> 1314 [avg 25/wk]
2011-2012 -> 1553 (+239) [avg 4.5/wk]
2012-2013 -> 3397 (+1844) [avg 35/wk]
2013-2014 -> 6939 (+3542) [avg 68/wk]

Really bad year in 2011 for some reason (less than 1 post a day!!)
2200 in past 6 months = 85/week

Looks like we're picking up speed!!

Caleb's first post instructions for this thread said to post the "next number."  Nowhere does Caleb say that the count must incremented by ones.  In the interest of getting my free game from Alex, I am wondering if this community might be persuaded to count by 1000s?

We could start over at 7000 or wait until we get to 8000.

Just running this idea up the flagpole to see if anyone salutes it.

Not a bad idea, although this game will be over probably in less than a month if we go counting by the thousand but i guess that is better than waiting i guess 500 years or whatever the time frame is to finish and then get our game...although all of us will be dead by then so..

I think the counting by 1000s was proposed somewhere in the abyss of all of the posts in that thread, I think it fell to the wayside, or maybe it just wasn't noticed by enough people. Big%20Smile

Counting by 1000 would end the thread very fast though, which kind of removes the magic. Maybe 10 would be better. LOL

Instead of increasing the interval or numbers, the easiest method would be to simply adjust the "1 Million".

(TBH, I would rather keep the interval at 1.)

However, counting to "1 Million" by "1000" intervals is just like counting to 1000 by 1s.. as you see this has been done and done quickly; therefore it is not really a challenge.

The 'spirit' of the original thread, IMHO, was to set a goal completely outside the realm of possibility. Yet here we are, day after day, plucking away at it.

Why do it at all? Because it was something to do for fun and not for profit.
