Topic: 2 weeks 2 buy. ND help Posted: 13 Jan 2011 at 7:01pm |
I was set on what I wanted to purchase (thanks to DST4ME & Dragoonseal) but now with the new 2600k I have some new ideas. Please help. My old configuration was
now I am thinking about #478131 and #478133 I really like 478133 but it is over my budget (my wife might kill me in my sleep if I spend that) but I might be able to squeez it. I left out the upgrade on a cooling system for 478131 because it was not needed (recommended) for the free upgrade w/the 2600k. My thoughts are that the 2600K is better than the 860 that I had chosen earlier. Also what is the free intel turbo boost 2.0 automactic OC? is that better than the 1 that I have selected( 3.6 - 3.9 oc)? Just for a refresher: I play mainly the Total War Series, Sims occasionaly(on a 23"), lots of internet, microsoft and excel for school work. My wife uploads alot of photos to the computer from the camera. That about sums it up, if I need to in 1-2 years I would add another card and upgrade my PSU at that time if my system is not keeping up with the Total War series but it should with that card. All help is appreciated, Thank you

Drop the expensive overclock option, you can always up it yourself later if you want, the 2600K is stupidly easy to overclock.
Personally, I think I'd probably recommend: Ticket #478152, Price: $1489 Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - HAF 922 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8P67-M PRO (Intel P67 Chipset) (Features USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s) System Memory: 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Digital Storm Certified (Dual SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition Recommended) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital/Seagate/Hitachi/Samsung (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470 1.2GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Noctua NH-U12P SE Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks Boost Processor: FREE: Overclock the processor between 3.6GHz to 3.9GHz Boost Video Card: FREE: Yes, Overclock the video card(s) as much as possible with complete stability Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: FREE: Hot-selling game with a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 or above graphics card Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty I don't remember your exact budget, sorry if that goes over it, easy enough to fix though. |

Dragoonseal is correct, and the build is good, the only slow part is the HDD, improving it would make the largest difference in day to day usage, but if the budget won't allow, then it still is a great rig.
I have had my sandy bridge for 7 hours now, so not much info, but yes it is easy to OC, yes its performance is incredible, yes I am bored to death with it, because of the lack of tweak-ability.. lol

yeah, no fun.. booting to windows at 5.3Ghz is cool, doing superpi 1m in the 6 second range is awesome, but the lack of tweaking is no fun for someone like me. linx at 5.1Ghz, temps in the 50's C lol HT on.. lol crazy.. but not my bag.

Joel I thought you said you wanted to game at 1900 x 1200 in your other thread, and we agreed on a 570.
based on that : Here you go Ticket# 478195 --- $1657 (To see this build click here) Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - HAF 922 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40GHz (Unlocked CPU for Extreme Overclocking) (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS P8P67-M PRO (Intel P67 Chipset) (Features USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s) System Memory: 4GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Corsair TX (Dual SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital/Seagate/Hitachi/Samsung (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 1.2GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Noctua NH-U12P SE Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks Boost Processor: FREE: Overclock the processor between 3.6GHz to 3.9GHz Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: FREE: Hot-selling game with a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 or above graphics card Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty correct me if I was wrong about the card, remember go with the corsair psu, it has its own 5 year warranty. |

Thanks for all the help guys.
DST4ME: In your last post you did suggest that if I wanted to play at that res (1900x1200) the 570 was the one to go with. I just decided to play at 1920x1080 and go with your last config which was the 6850. And yeah she would KILL me if I spend that much on a rig (your present config). Dragoonseal: I actually like your config you got there. I will have to add my neon lights of course, up the HD to a TB, and somebody will have to explain the overclocking as I have no idea how to. That will probably bring me to around $1539 B4 shipping and taxes(which is the build in the original post (price wise). I am going to have to hide the purchase receipt if I do that, LOL... justin.kerr: is there that much of a difference in speed from the 16MB cache HD and 32MB? Nobody has of yet explained to me what the free 2.0 turbo boost is which is right B4 the free OC of 3.6 to 3.9. Sorry for sounding dumb just don't know what it is and would like to

not much speed difference in just the Cache, it is more of the specific design of the hard drive, and that 500 is slower than the WD 1TB black, by a good margin, but when the budget is tight, I understand.
I do not know for sure what Digital Storm means, with the 2.0 turbo boost, I am guessing it is the the stock settings, that allow the 2600K to overclock one core up to 3.8Ghz, even the non K CPUs will overclock that high, well actually higher, but we are talking stock settings now.
The 2600K will overclock to 4.4Ghz-4.6Ghz rock solid, and cool running, and it sadly takes no skill, or knowledge.. there is a video showing old Grandma that no PC knowledge overclocking a 2600K to 4.8Ghz. lol one click of one button in most UEFI BIOS's will get you to at least 4.6Ghz. it will not the best overclock settings, but it is that easy.. I would recommend having either Digital Storm do a proper overclock, or having us help you on the forums. |

With SB from what I'm hearing its gonna be easy to oc.
the stock turbo as justin pointed out is one core getting oced, the free oc option will get all cores to 3.9 to 3.9Ghz, I would go with this option sense its free, then once you get it and its stable then go ahead and oc it yourself |

You know what, you might want to go with 8GB of ram, since 64bit wants 2GB to itself.

You got everything disabled on yours at the same time tho. on my system, on others dwm will take up 350MB itself, tho I have not seen a system yet that has used over 1GB for the os myself.
just going by what MS says lol. Edited by DST4ME - 14 Jan 2011 at 6:17pm |

Ok, After much thought and consideration and help from individuals on this forum I have decided on the config that I want.
#480511 Even though it's over my budget I will probably get this one unless something changes in the next 3 days then I will go with #480635 I am putting in my order this week. Any last thoughts and suggestions are welcome. Thanks everyone for your help. I could not have gotten this far with out you guys.

Sorry, I think that part of the site was down but I redid the one that was a little over budget. #480511.. but maybe I will jusy get the basic board instead of the pro. The only difference is the pro has blue chip and sli vs the basic that doen't have these 2 options, correct??
The config that is closer 2 budget is #480511 with a 470GPU instead of the 570
Maybe even switch the ASUS board for the INTEL dp67. What do you think DST4ME? Edited by Joel - 24 Jan 2011 at 10:13pm |

going off of 480511, you need to change a few things, going with 750w psu means you can't go sli, so the basic asus is what you want, yes the pro will have a little bit better bandwidth for sli than the basic.
you need to change psu to corsair, I would stick with the 570, better performance, less power, runs cooler. so I'm thinking this build: Ticket Number: 481154 |

Is the 6970 a better card than the 570 for the Total War series?

not sure to be honest, I have not seen any benches of tws with 570 vs 6970, but both pretty much offer the same performance pretty much, so IMO its a matter of preference.
