Topic: ~$2000 Rig HelpPosted: 29 Jul 2009 at 12:13am |

I was looking at the Power & Value rig, and I am very tempted; however, I am at a stage in my life where I think it is more appropriate to have a less "intense" looking machine if anyone knows what I mean. I want to be able to enjoy occasional Aion, Crysis, etc. on a relatively quick / capable machine without the stigma of a behemoth in my space sort of deal.
I was looking at perhaps getting something more stylish like the Cooler Master Cosmos case (either steel or aluminum, whichever is more suitable for a case.) I have heard that Digital Storm will order cases for you. I am wondering if anyone can help me build a machine for that without losing way too much performance. If need be, I can add more ram at a later date.
Also I was wondering, would adding components later on, such as a sound card/blu ray drive/ram, nullify the warranty in any way, shape, or form?
I was looking for something priced at around $2000 after the discounts apply. I do not mind spending some more money later on to upgrade memory and such / other easy things to upgrade without scrapping old parts.

What resolution will you be gaming at? They can order parts for you to help build your system, you would have to talk with DS to see what they would charge for the Coolermaster Cosmos.
IIRC, adding components won't violate your warranty.

Price after discount: $2,117.00 Ticket Number: 314473 Copy of Specifications: If you want to sacrifice your settings on the resolution, you may want to switch to a single GeForce 275 and add another later as well.

Honeslty to play games at high settings at 1900 x 1200 res you need 2 gpus, and at your budget, thats is going to be tight, I say that because a. cosmos s will cost more then the haf, and b. ordering stuff that is not in the config page will cost more then what you would pay if you were to get it.
having said that: Here you go Ticket# 314476 --- Price: $2269 (To see this build click here) Price after current promotion $2069 Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Cooler Master HAF 932 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: XFX X58 3X SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) (Supports Triple SLI or CrossFire) System Memory: 3GB DDR3 1333MHz Digital Storm Certified by mushkin enhanced (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 750W Corsair TX (Dual SLI Compatible) Card Reader: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 2x SLI Dual (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 275 896MB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 2: Noctua NH-U12P High Performance Cooler (Compatible With ONLY i7 Processors) Liquid Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a H20: Stage 3 Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Red) Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Requires Air Cooling Upgrade) Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) With Windows 7 Upgrade Coupon Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-10 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty this will handle whatever you throw at it at 1900 x 1200 @Kryhavoc, the 250 gtx is pretty weak gpu, even 2 of those will not do that great at 1900 x 1200 Edited by DST4ME - 29 Jul 2009 at 12:38am |

Ah, I see what you did there, you went with the XFX MOBO instead of the EVGA MOBO. Yea, that will save money right there.

Alright, thank you. I mean the budget is slightly higher when I say the upgrade bit. Its more that this part of it I am not paying for, but is rather a gift / work payment kind of deal from parents; so, I don't want to just go insane over what we usually have spent (usually about $2000 every 4 or so years on a rig.) That being said, I do not mind adding additional money to upgrade ram and stuff on my own dime. Thank you again for the configs. So I know, where would be the places to upgrade that machine when I have my own available cash? I'd assume increase the ram. Can the 750 W handle additional ram with those two GPUs? I heard 750 can get tight with SLI.

PS... I love how the community members here are more helpful than the staff of almost all the other computer companies I've tried to deal with in this endeavor. DS has been great before I've gone through with the purchase.

the 750w can easily handle 2 x 275 and whatever else you got.
adding ram is easy and cheap, when you are ready just match your ram here you can always call them and ask them how much they will knock off the price if you supply the ram yourself then buy this 6GB and send it to them if the price works out call Sarah at 1-866-817-8676 Extension: 115 and she will set you up ![]() ![]() Edited by DST4ME - 29 Jul 2009 at 12:55am |

It's fantastic. I already own one DS, and always ignored these forums before today.
With all the knowledgeable people here, I missed a goldmine.

I keep flopping back and forth about this style bit. From what I have seen recently, it seems like the cases look fairly blan / not crazy (not the right word, but you know what I mean) without lighting which is good.
I am now wondering between the $1800 prebuild & the $2300 prebuild ( a bit over budget .) I'd mainly be watching movies on 1080p if I were to be operating at higher resolutions...[something like the 32" 1080p samsung 120 hz]. And gaming at, perhaps that resolution, but I could buy a monitor that is a lower resolution or use my old one for gaming.
Are one of these prebuilt my best option, or would it still be best to design my own machine? I am only concerned with the prebuilts in the game of upgrading. I was wondering how much I would have to spend to upgrade these machines to SLI at some point. I imagine for both of them that I would need to upgrade the PSU. Is it hard to do this without messing up the liquid cooling? Would the liquid cooling still be adequate if I did this at a later point?
I am just thinking that I am being silly being so determined over one case.

our configs are always better. the system I have configed for you is better then any prebuild and is ready to handle the res of 1900 x 1200, why are you even looking at a prebuild when my build is better, stronger and at $2069?
keep in mind that cases for the prebuild are not painted the way you see them in the pic, they are no different then the haf in my config. Edited by DST4ME - 29 Jul 2009 at 9:40pm |

I was asking as I wasn't aware as of whether it stronger or not for the not 1900 x 1200. Thank you again though, you have been a great help.

That is good to know, as I probably would end up failing to upgrade down the road. My last computer I did that, but the performance fall off was never that bad for me until DX10 came out. I am just wondering, will the air cooling be very noisy? Also, if I were to spend a little more money...where should I spend it? Ram/Processor/HD or?

most of your noise will come from the gpus's fans, and those are loud when under load.
first get 6GB of ram, and then if you have money left over upgrade mobo to evga x58 sli or LE. Edited by DST4ME - 29 Jul 2009 at 9:47pm |

Alright; so, I assume that would mean liquid cooling is pointless unless I were to do one that cools the video card. As most of the noise would come from the fans, which would still be needed, even with stage 3 [not the CPU &GPU], for the GPUs?
Would the 750 PSU be sufficient for a later additional HD (either another 500gig or a 1 T), 3gigs of additional ram (6 total), a blu-ray drive, and a sound card? Or would that be pushing the limits of the PSU? I tend to use my computer for everything.

your PSU should be fine, if you LC the GPUs then it will be quite, but you need to LC the GPUs and CPU, that will cost a good chunk, also if you GPU 2 cards, its best to do the dual loop otherwise the temps may not be that great.

Alright; so, this is what I am looking at then. I upgraded to 6 gigs total ram and the EVGA mobo. That puts me at $2410, but I think that it is worth it to further upgrade something for approximately $90 as that'll give me, basically, a 50% discount on whatever I buy for that price range.
What do you think would be the best use of this money?
ie Aesthetic things I can't do later, upgrading the hard drive to 1T, upgrading the PSU (although that shouldn't be needed as you said with those future additions), overclocking the GPUs or memory?
Last one, I promise...and then you should be seeing my specs / pictures at some point :-p.

$2410 yes but you get $200 off of that so really its $2210.
the psu doesn't need upgrading, no need to upgrade the HDD to 1TB, instead if you need more room, add another 500GB HDD as HDD3, you case can take 5 HDDs. gpu and ram oc is pointless and not needed. you got everything you need, there is nothing else to get. |

Thank you :)
What I meant is the $2410 is $2210, but if I spent $90 more it is only $2250 due to the $50 off if I spend another $90. I'll just use it to touch up the looks and add a card reader for SD cards and such. (I do tend to upload a good amount of pictures via SD cards.)
Ordering tomorrow, I'll post soon. Thank you again for all of your help.

Just out of curiousity, would the 910w PC Power & cooling be a good option? Just a little less money, and I am assuming should be more than enough for my planned upgades? |

Ya that will do too.
I mean you don't really need it, but if you have to spend another $90 or so then the psu is the place to go.

My pleasure, its not a matter of safe or sorry, you are very safe with a 750w, its a matter of where would the $90 best be spent

So now the question comes,
Do you have any displays you reccomend DST? Size isn't that important to me, but I imagine 24" is a good size for me.
I want to be able to watch movies on it ( on a couch or bed a few feet away ) & play games from relatively close. I think going with something at 30" would be too big for gaming, albeit great for movies. And something like 20" would be great for gaming, but too small for movies. Would you reccomend something slightly larger like 26"?
As for TV tuner: I don't really care if it has it or not, but it'd be a nice pro if it does.
Which monitors do you reccomend? I've heard good things about the Samsung SyncMaster 245t.

If you can go 30" everybody here I have seen have a 30" has had nothing but great things to say about it, everybody seems to like the Dell 3007WFP-HC.
other then that, I guess it would be a 24", I'm not monitor expert, but the ones that know about it say you should look for a monitor what has the same Viewing Angle, both vertical and horizontal, and above 170°, this most times indicates that its not a tn panel, you don't want a tn panel, due to it low image quality. Alrighty, thanks. And my computer should be more than fine to run that size monitor correct? I am not sure about whether demand on the video card is just done by resolution or size as well.

for 30" your best bet is 3 x 275, you can add the third 275 anytime you want so you can always try the 30" with the 2 x 275 and is if that is enough for you, but for high settings you will need 3 x 275.

Alright thanks, I may get myself a decent small monitor to start with. And I'll get that when the price on that and 275s drop more. Will that stage 2 air cooling suffice for three gpus though?

Btw DST, careful on pricing things with the discount. They've changed it since inception without really telling anyone. Worth looking at again.
