Topic: 24" widescreen monitor Posted: 29 Aug 2007 at 4:52pm |
Anyone know what some of the top 24" widescreen monitors would be? I hear great things about the Dell 24" and it is like $550 or so right now. I compared that to the Samsung 244t and the Samsung has 500 cd/m2 brightness while the Dell only has 400 cd/m2... is that a big deal? The Samsung i am using right now is 300 cd/m2 brightness.
So, what are people's thoughts or does anyone have any reviews or anything?
I am leaning towards the Dell because I have heard good things and it looks nice, but I want a second opinion.

If you have a bright bright room, get the higher brightness.
They both seem to have similar specs so I would get whatever is cheaper. Edited by skyR - 29 Aug 2007 at 7:08pm |

The Dell 24" looks great, and I have yet to get a dead pixel after about a year of use. I'd highly recommend it.

nomec, one thing to keep in mind (that I've just learned myself), is that if you cant run your games at 1680x1050, you images are gonna look a little squashed on a wide screen. Some games are worse than others are. I just did purchase the Samnsung 22" 226BW and a lot of my older games don't go that high and things can look a little funny sometimes. Games that DO have the higher resolution fit the screen perfectly, but the extra power needed to run some of those games (GRAW2 for example), kill my frame rate. How did I solve this problem? I just purchased a rock solid butt kickin' DS PC! ;-) Do you really need such a large screen? Even the 22" makes my neck hurt after reading text for any period of time. I feel like I'm reading out of a really big book with my head going from left to right all the time. But, as for gaming it’s awesome. Why not go with the 22" and see if you like that first? Just a suggestion . . . BTW, if anyone happens to read this post and knows of a way to make older game titles with max resoltions below the wide screen resolution, run without squashing the images please lemme know, k? Thanks. Steve |

I think a lot of the popular games from even like 2004, like HL2, Farcry, etc, have support for widescreen resolutions without the squashing or whatever it's called or at least have released patches. I know that all new games support it so I am not all that worried.
I already have a 21" regular monitor and I am going SLI with my new system so I think that getting a 24" is a must or else I am wasting my firepower.

It's not completely done but something along the lines of:
Case: Digital Storm Twister EXTREME (Black Anodized Aluminum Finish)
Power Supply: 1000W Thermaltake (8800 GTX SLI Compatible) (Silent Toughpower Edition) Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad (TwisterBoost Enhanced) QX6800 Extreme 3.33GHz (1333MHz FSB) Motherboard: nVidia 680i Core 2 Quad (By: eVGA) (nForce 680i SLI) (A1 Revision) Memory: 2GB DDR2 Corsair at 1066MHz Dominator (Dual Channel) (Extreme-Performance) Floppy / Media: Sony 1.44MB Floppy (Black Edition) Hard Drive 1: 250GB (Western Digital / Seagate) (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Hard Drive 2: 250GB (Western Digital / Seagate) (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Raid Option: Setup my two hard drives in a Raid 0 Stripe (Read and Write Performance Boost) Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Network Card: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Modem: - No Thanks Video Card: 2x SLI Dual (nVidia GeForce 8800ULTRA 768MB (By: eVGA / Asus) (PCI-Express) TV Tuner: - No Thanks Sound Card: Creative Labs Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer (Up to 7.1 Channel) (Recommended) Physics Card: - No Thanks Cooling: Air Cooled Stage 3 (Silent Artic Cooling (TwisterBoost Overclocked) Case Lighting: Blizzard Internal Lighting (Blue Edition) (Cold Cathode Tubes) Round Cables: - No Thanks User Manual: Personalized Platinum Digital Storm Binder (Includes Paperwork/Benchmarks/CDs/Manuals) Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium I might go with more RAM and vista 64-bit and possibly two 10k raptors in raid but I'm not sure yet. Also might drop the video cards down to GTX's since SLI'ing Ultras may be overkill. However going GTX's wants me to overclock them but i don't think cooling stage 3 will allow me to do that.

Well, I think you should maybe be able to run the Space Shuttle with THAT configuration! (Smile) I agree with you about the cooling. With the amount of money you'll have invested with this system, I think I would go liquid cooling if I went with two Ultras. Thats a great sytem. My rig is gonna have just the Q6600 (overclocked to 2.7) and a 8800 GTX 768. Its no where near the rig you're putting together, but I think it should be able to run most, if not all games coming out for a while? I hope so anyway . . .

well the thing is I don't think I can afford to spend over $5k and liquid cooling will probably do that to me. If someone can tell me that the SLI Ultra's won't be able to run on air then I will drop it to GTX's but I don't know. |

From what I read in Tom's Hardware performance chart, the Ultra's didn't seem to give all that more performance over the GTX's. Check out that chart and compare the two? Might save you a few bucks. You really need two video cards? With that processor you've choosen and a 8800 GTX, it should play anythng you throw at it, right?
