Topic: $2500 Budget (Best gaming comp) Posted: 16 Apr 2010 at 11:04am |
Would someone post the best gaming configuration I can get for $2500?
I will be buying as soon as I return my new computer from IBuyPower. I'm returning this one because the Coolermaster V8 was installed incorrectly and I don't trust them enough to attempt a repair while allowing my 30 day money back guarantee to expire.
I want something that will work perfectly out of the box. If DS is that company then please help me out. ty

Welcome to the forums Alci ! I hope your DS experience is as good as mine!
As Dragoonseal stated "What is your monitor's max resolution?", we already have your budget, and I am going to assume from the topic title that the pc's primary use is for gaming. The more information you give the configuration guru's on here, the better they can configure a build that best suits your needs.

Max resolution is 1920x1080. The primary use is gaming, but I would like it to do well in other applications. I don't know what else to add.

there r many problems with the build you suggested.
1. a full tower is recommended if you have the space, this is for more expandability as well as better airflow. 2. that gpu is complete overkill for his needs 3. that gpu runs very hot 4 that cooling system you reccomended is total crap. 5 in most cases the ati 5xxx series performs better. unless we are talking about 3d art and medical research 6 that LC is not efficiant, it leaks, and you can better cooling from other options 7 that hdd is way to big for the os. once it gets filled enough it will take for ever to defrag, maintain, scan ect. 8 why would you choose black ops for this? the only real reason to go black ops if for the cooling options and some other perks. everything he needs can be found in the special hot deals section. alci i apologize for the inconvenience please allow me to make a few builds for you. |

I am sorry about your experience with the "bargain" builder. Isn't much of a bargain when it's broke.
This forum is one of the many reasons to buy a DS system. The guys in here are great and fall all over themselves to help you. One of the "elites" will be by and configure something real nice for you soon. One of the things I am sure they will recommend is getting one of the high end Noctua air coolers instead of the Asetek. I am not familiar with the Asetek coolers so I cannot give you a great reason. I myself find the 240mm version interesting but have real trouble finding any reviews on them. The Noctua coolers however have many many reviews and they are all good. They will likely also recommend that you do not have DS tweak your Windows 7. Here is a config I did just real quick based on the one you did. Saves you a little bit of money. If I understand it correctly you said your res is 1900 x 1200 so this what you want, some of the builds above have it backwards, I think the poster didn't realize it, anyways here are 2 builds, one ati and one with nvidia, I like nvidia but you decide which you like:

In a few month buy a ssd and use that for HDD1 for OS/Games/Apps, and push the 1TB to HDD2 and use it for storage. remember: HDD1 = fast small drive: os/apps/games HDD2 = regular large drive: media/personal/work file storage Don't fill up your HDD1 more then 50%, if think you will need more room for it then pick a bigger one. Wow thx for the replies. I won't be able to read through them all until tomorrow, but I have 1 question about the air cooling. The reason I send my recent purchase back to IBP for refund was because the CoolerMaster V8 was seating properly and my CPU was overheating. Teck support said this is common which was the main reason I opted for a refund. How can these guys fix the problem if the solution doesnt survive shipment. Is this a problem with all the air coolers? I just want to buy a good system and face no more hassels. Will an air cooled CPU from DS survive shipment intact? ty

V8s are well known for that issue, and I have seen it happen countless times.
My question is why is everyone using an LE board? If they decide to add another card in the future, one of the cards will be limited by the 8x slot. |

I ordered one for my mom a few months back that had the noctua-12 air cooler option. It was damaged in shipping and DS took care of it after a few phone calls and e-mail of pictures. Damage can occur from shipping even when there is no apparent damage to the box. I just took lots of pics during unpacking. DS sent me a new cooler and fans and paid shipping on it and the return. They offered phone tech support to walk me through the install as well.
Problems happen it is how it gets taken care of that is the most important.

As far as benchmarks are showing about the only cards that can really saturate a x8 slot are the GTX 480 or an ATI 5970. Even then, you only lose about 1%-5% of the performance with a 480 on a x8 lane, depending on the game (2% average). The 5970 can apparently lose upwards of 15% performance in some games. The 5870 loses around 1%-2%. So unless you're running dual ATI 5970s it doesn't currently seem to be much to fret over with today's current GPUs, especially considering how much it costs to get rid of the issue. You'd either have to move up to an EVGA x58 x3 SLI board and give up on being able to use a Noctua NH-D14 cooler, or you would have to spend hundreds to move up to an EVGA x58 Classified board. The Classified board being a lot more expensive is also compounded by the fact that it is not an option in the Special Deals configurations, meaning you would have to configure a computer in the Black OPS configuration section which is going to tack on at least another $200 on top of that. I think a lot more people would use the Classified board if it was an option in the Special Deals PCs. |

Ya long story short with 8x you only lose like 4 fps in most games with a 480/5870.

between the SSD performance, and the GPU performance and also it is mandatory for high CPU clocks it is very worth it.

DST4ME,
Are you kidding? Remember,..... this is Justin Kerr to whom you refer...
No doubt EVERYTHING is overclocked......including the fridge, microwave, blender, lawn mower, leaf blower, and probably the family dog
Seriously, I love the fact he keeps pushing the boundaries...JPT

How's this for a final build? I really wanted USP 3.0 capable MB. I also didn't like the new Nvidia 480 after I read how hot and loud it runs. I like to play games but I don't need the best of the best to play. Priced $2570 Three question though.
1. What's the probability that the Noctua NH-D14 Extreme Performance cooler will arrive intact? Is there a known issue of it coming loose during shipment?
2. Will there be enough clearance using the Noctura NH-14 to add another set of the triple channel memory without having to remove it?
3. Is an overclocked 930 chip as good as a non overclocked 960 chip? How much of the 930's life will be shortened by overclocking?
Thx for your help.

Sorry to stray Alci......
I ordered the D12 for my rig and worried about the same..with all the expanded foam and strips of foam for support, I had absolutely NO problems with mine.
I realize the D14 is larger, but DS really packs these things well. I have heard of problems with the cooling extenders on some memory having clearance problems with the D14.
The numbers most bandied about on these forums is 8 years without overclock vs 6 years with overclock. the point being that the CPU etc. will probably be obsolete in 5 years anyway; so you'll progbably upgrade beore the unit fails.
I don't run AC in my home in central Texas. Running the D12 Noctua gives me case temps of 26c-27c in the winter( ambient 67-68 F) AND 32c to 35c this spring(ambient 85f to 87f).
My CPU temps run 44c at idle and 50c to 60 c under moderate load. I had my GPU overclocked and lost the overclock due to my stupidity...never noticed the difference in FPS, etc. Gpu temps are 34c(idle) 48c to 58 c under my game loads.
Hope the info is useful.................JPT Edited by jaypeetee44 - 20 Apr 2010 at 3:29pm |

whatever ocing the pci lanes would get from the cpu oc obviously will be there so I'm not gonna mention the same thing twice, that is what I meant when I said it was not worth it to mention the oc on pci.
I have seen some users report that the 480s don't run as hot as reported, but if you like the 5870 that is cool. 1. as far as I know its should arrive fine, but any system that does not have a crate can have some shipping damage. 2. I'm not a 100% sure but I think you should be ok, however for gaming you will not need anymore then 6GB of ram, 6GB is more then enough, more ram will do nothing, zip, ziltch, zero. 3. with oc your cpu should last you atleast 8 years. the difference between 2.8GHz and 3.2GHz are very little in games. that mobo does not have true sata 3.0 and usb 3.0, don't go with it, mobos with true sata 3.0 and usb 3.0 will comes out next year, any mobo right now can have usb 3.0 with a usb card, but remember to use usb 3.0 speed, both sides have to be usb 3.0, in other words if you have a usb device that is usb 2.0 and you have a usb 3.0 connection, you still will be running at usb 3.0 speed. In short drop that mobo and go with evga. your build looks good, just change teh mobo back to evga LE, change your gpu to 1GB 5870, the version you have picked it a waste of your money, and change your os to win7 pro. |

Alci, please trust me, DST4ME is The Man when it comes to configs IMHO. If he says don't get it, you're better off without it. When I first came to the forums ( about 3 1/2 months ago), I was considering that same mobo and a few other odds and ends that would have just wasted my dough. Fortunately for me, I had lots of time before my tax refund to lurk while he advised on build after build after build. He advised, I researched, and he really knows this stuff backwards.
As for the fan surviving shipping, have you seen the foam packing, etc DS puts INSIDE the case to prevent parts coming loose? Check out a few of the reviews with pics, you'll get an idea of the packing job they do. Looks good to me! BTW, I'm in stage 3 on a build almost word for word the one DST advises for you! Good luck.
