Ok...budget is around 2300 or so.....don't really want to go over that......i'm wanting the best "bang for my buck".......I want a PC that is going to give me consistant performance for atleast 3 years without needing to upgrade much....besides the GPU......one major question....2500k or 2600k?? Which should I choose....AND a reason why would be nice....I know the difference in the two...
I know there are some games out there that take advantage of multiple cores, but the games i'm going to be playing are more GPU needy.....Mafia 2.....BBC2......GTA4........Civ V....and then of course....a lot of web surfing......I don't do video editing....I won't be doing any graphic work....just want an all around PC....that will do what I want it to......getting 100 FPS is not important to me...but I do want enough GPU power to get me by for the next 3 years....AT LEAST..... I've been back an forth between the 2500k and the 2600k......I know the advantages of the 2600k but i'm just not sure I will ever need at this time the extra cores......if you guys can give me some advice as to what I should choose...that would be great...... I'll be ordering this thing as soon as my tax return comes in...suppose to be here on the 11th......"fingers crossed"............. i'm wanting the haf932 case with 4 gigs of corsair dominator ram....and 1tb WD caviar black HDD....no SSD needed or desired at this time.... |

I am not an expert, but I have been researching this lately for my own build.
The 2600k may not be strictly needed today, but I am reasonably certain in one or two, especially three full years you might actually want/need the hyperthreading. A good choice for future proofing I think.

I have a 2500k in my current gaming rig and have no issues, but I only play WoW, NTW and Civ 5. Also currently doing the betas for Rift, when I get a new rig and give the old one to the wife I think I will still stick with the 2500k unless I see something that shows the 2600k is needed.

I'm also in the same boat, but I think the 2500k should suit my needs just fine.
Frankly I just want A DS computer. Been wanting one for quite a few years now. Edited by pwcorgi - 07 Feb 2011 at 5:55pm |

I think I have decided to go with the 2500k......i've ready so many reviews other places that say if the primary use for the RIG is gaming then the i5 2500k is all you will really need....this will save me a considerable amount of money and allow me to add a few extras that I was considering dropping before......going to SLI the new 560 evga overclocked gpu's and add a SSD.....I should be set come 2/11/11.....the order button will be clicked on that day......YAY!!

Neither right now. There is currently a recall by Intel on all Sandy Bridge Processors. :(

If been told the 2600k is better because it has more threads, reason I went with it and I wanted a large overclock...more threads means more multi-tasking, so if I want to browse the web or something while my game is up I can...its not much more than the 2500k...if you dont go with the 2600k and run something that uses max threads, and then window out to do something you'll get a slow point so to speak...you'll feel like your back to using a slow ass machine...if I was you I would just save a tad bit more for it, but thats just me!
But either way like the above poster mentioned, with a correction "the processors are fine" the SandyBridge Motherboards are all recalled because the sata 2 ports start to degrade after 2yrs of use...but yea untill they come in DS cant even start doing their thing, so you have some extra time to save in my opinion...Thier most recent post said late feb, early march is the current estimate for the new boards to come in...but it could be longer I dont think anyone really knows lol...I ordered the jan 20th and im a sad sad panda this is going to be the longest wait of my life! you saying that I can't even order the sandy bridge at all?....I know the probs with the boards....that isn't a concern for me......hard drives will be on sata3 ports and optical will be on sata2 port.......not a prob for me.....
So again......am I not even able to purchase a sandybridge system right now? i'm willing to buy it even with the defect in the mobo.... |

At the beginning DS was going to allow people with exsisting orders to go ahead and have the system built with the malfunctioning motherboards for the same reason you stated, having things plug'd into the good sata ports...which I agree'd too, but they called 4 days after the posting on the issue and said the only board they had available was the delux , so they are out of everything else and cant get their hands on any boards malfunctioning or not because of the recall status...and that was a few days ago, so im guessing they are out of the delux by now leaving no boards to go with untill the new board shipment comes in that arent malfunctioning. So you can order, but just like the rest of us your order will be on hold untill the arival of the new boards. Edited by Divine - 08 Feb 2011 at 3:00am |

I would wait of new boards in my opinon, they latest estimate for arrival is late feb or early march...im waiting, I didnt like it very much when I found out lol...but I just took a deep breath so to speak and said to myself "well ive managed to use this crappy compaq for a yr, whats another month or 2" or you can switch to x58, the bonus with that is it allows for full 16X lans for multi GPU configurations...But it is a tad bit more expensive, and unless you get the 980x I could be wrong but the 2600k beats the others I believe in power.

That sucks, so no SB, well to be honest if I were in your guy's shoes, I would wait, might as well, by that time price of somethings will have gone done possibly, and new stuff will be on the market, but if you have to have it now, then you have to have it now.
@corybo7 here is a build that can go sli, and it has the 160GB ssd, 1TB caviar, if you want to cut down the price, we can go with a regular 1TB drive and then the 80GB ssd but the 80GB has slower write speed than the 160GB, just fyi: Here you go Ticket# 485062 --- $2476 (To see this build click here) Copy of Specifications: Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master HAF 932 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 950 3.06GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: ASUS Sabertooth X58 (Intel X58 Chipset) (Features USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gb/s) System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 1000W Corsair (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (160GB Solid State (By: Intel) (Model: X25-M MLC Edition) (Extreme Performance) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Western Digital Caviar (7200 RPM) (64MB Cache) (Model: Black Edition WD1002FAEX) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 1.2GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 1: Noctua NH-U12P SE Dual 120mm Fans High Performance Cooler H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: - No Thanks Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks Boost Processor: FREE: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Cooling Upgrade Recommended) Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Recovery Tools: Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: - No Thanks Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Suc |

looks like a good build......that air cooler is ugly as crap though......I like the CM V6 GT.....works with my red lighting.....and the DS certified RAM is not something i'm interested in.....Corsair Dominator is the way to go for me......80gig SSD is all I need....and i'm more interested in the 560Ti...that I can overclock myself and be equal to if not better than the 570.....

Ok boss I'm just trying to help:
1. you will notice any difference between dominator gt and the DS ram. 2. the Noctua does a better job of cooling. 3. you can oc the 560 all you like, its not gonna give you more vram, which is something you need for some of those games you named. Hope that helps, now knowing all of that, if you still want to get the parts you mentioned then more power to you, its you pc, you get what you like, we are just here to point out when your money is going to waste, at the end of the day, its your money, you do what makes you happy

In my experience with hard drives as a gamer...I don't think 80gb is enough for an os+game primary drive. I have in all of my previous computers chosen somewhat small hard drives, and it is so annoying when you have to start purging stuff from the drive to install the latest game. Maybe you are better at managing your storage than I am though!

please, or please do not get that coolermaster cooler. just stay with the stock cooler, better quality, near identical cooling. if you want to upgrade the cooling get the Noctua. or maybe if Digital Storm will think about the Corsair A70. A bit louder than the Noctua, but very well built, very easy install, best fan mounting system I have used to date, great temps.

lol wow I guess I need to pay more attention, now going to have to look at the price, I know what I paid,
I see, same price as Noctua. Think they need to re-check their costs with Corsair, or who ever they are getting them from, should be close to 1/2 the price. Mine was $31.00 Edited by justin.kerr - 09 Feb 2011 at 11:39am |

what is wrong with the CM V6 GT? I have seen numerous great reviews for it.....It actually cools better than the V8....Can you send me a link that shows the difference in cooling between the CM v6 GT and the noctua?...I havn't seen a comparison of them yet......if you can prove it cools better then I might consider it....

Ok ok I relent.....the noctua does seem to be better than the CM v6gt.....but it's still one of the ugliest coolers......

It does not cool as well as Noctua and its louder then Noctua, show me a review that shows the Noctua not doing better than the Noctua or being more quiet than the Noctua. We are customers like you, we just want you to get the best parts for your money, so when we see a part that cools better and does it more quietly, we gonna tell you about it.
Noctua runs at around 38 dba, v6 runs at around 54 dba and I'm not sure if that is at full speed even to be honest. Edited by DST4ME - 10 Feb 2011 at 1:17am |

Reliability wise, the Coolermaster is realy, really poor.
When overclocking, the coolermaster falls way behind.
I really like the Corsair, it has cooled as well as the Noctua uD14 for me, but also none of the reviewers ever test on systems that are overclocked very high.
The Corsair is louder, but since it is the same price as the Noctua Ud12, just as well go that route..
The Corsair does have a beefier mounting bracket also.
