So... I haven't made the final call but I am leaning towards purchasing the Dell u2711 27" 2560x1440 resolution monitor.
Assuming a budget of $4500-5500 (for the rig sans monitor), what sort of package would support the above monitor assuming high settings? I know its a min of 480 SLI but have no idea other than that where the sweet spot would lie for performance/price in that range.
I am interested in playing Dragon Age, Mass Effect 2, Fallout: Las Vegas, Metro Games: 2033, Stalker: Call of Pripyat, as a sampling of games. I also play games such as Strategic Command, Knights of the Chalice, and Spiderweb Software all of which are a little old school if you think that matters.
I am not interested in fancy paint jobs or colored interior lighting. Fan/CPU noise is not a big concern as I dont have roomates or a spouse to keep up at night. Sound is not as critical for me so a basic/decent level sound/speaker system is probably fine.
Any keyboard/mouse reccomendations as well? I am primarily a single player gamer but was thinking about getting a keyboard with back lit keys. I used to play some MMPORG (AC: Darktide ;)) but may dip my toe back in with the new Bioware Starwars they are working on.
In any case, please let me know if there are any other details you might need. Lol, I have included a budget and a resolution which seems to me the most common response.
DST4ME helped before but advised waiting for 480s to come out.
Thanks to all for any thoughts.
V/r,
AOM :)

well to power that resolution you will need serious GPU power... 2 at a min and 3x 480 recommended and they run hot so you will need stage 6 LC with GPU water blocks
keyboard... this is soemthign u need to touch and feel. try saitek II/III also logitec g 15 mouse razer Lachesis or death adder or copperhead we need a budget to follow... i would say for this res 6k+ |

You don't need a third, two 480s should be able to max almost everything at that high of res except the usual suspects like Crysis and Metro 2033. I wouldn't consider it worth it to spend another $500 just to max two more games when you could just turn their AA settings down a tad instead. And you do not need LC at all. Not for a single 480, not for multiple 480 in SLI. |

Was looking for the same thing (the u2711 is a sweet monitor)......need a famous DST4ME build suggestion to zero in on what is required to drive that monitor at max settings with an AIR cooled system. Edited by Damon - 24 May 2010 at 7:47pm |

Thanks for all the replies! I have a few questions:
1. If I decided to go crazy and wanted a 3 SLI system, what changes would you make? 2. I though even for 2 480s you needed liquid cooled? Am I going to run into heat issues? As I said, not as concerned with fan noise so if the performance difference is mainly only sound then i dont have a real preference. Thanks again! Pulling the trigger within a week or so I think. --AOM |

You do not need LC with 2 - 480s. DST4ME has added the D-14 AIR cooled system which will handle the dual cards just fine.

the lc would be more of a luxury... meaning you gpu temps will be cut in half.
you will do well with 2x sli and a case with great airflow. the air coolers only do the cpu nothing else. Edited by Raif - 27 May 2010 at 4:51pm |

the D14 is for cpu guys it has nothing to do with the graphic cards.
the cards will be fine, you don't need LC, tri sli will help very little with some games, but a couple of games out there may need it like crysis, I would not bother with it. |

DST4ME - it makes more sense to go with the Classified MB if you go dual 480s right?
About to place order, just want to make sure...as always thx for the help!!!
PS - read the reviews on the Classified and it looks like an awesome motherboard - won a ton of awards. Seems like a perfect match for dual 480 and a good OC.
Agree??

Changed the shirt size and updated the warranty to take advantage of the special PROMO offer.
Just wanted you to sanity check before hitting buy it now!
You like the Classified MB in this dual 480 config? I think it will be great, was looking for your thoughts (since I respect them). Edited by Damon - 29 May 2010 at 3:03am |

OK!! Order-Day is here!!
I tried ticket number but it said I was expired. Sorry for the trouble DST4ME but could you please double check that nothing has changed or that you would do different. If prices dropped and I threw in a third 480 that should be pretty easy for me to do right? Would the chassis, fans, power, etc., support this? After tracking these boards for awhile now I trust your builds completely. Thanks and I'll check back in a few hours to order my new monster! :) THANK YOU DS AND DST4ME!! --AOM ![]() |

OK, thess may be a stupid questions, but be kind....
I ordered my new DS rig with Dual 480s (build above) and I am connecting them to a High Res Monitor 2560x1440 (new Dell u2711).
Both should be arriving any day now....CAN NOT wait!!!
Here are the questions:
1. How do I hook up the dual cards to the monitor? (never had a dual card setup)
2. Which cable do I use for Max Resolution and Performance? (the monitor comes with a number of cables...which is best?)
3. Anyone have a picture of the cable and connection port to use?
I know this is noobie, but I want to make sure I hookup right and receive the best performance.
Thanks guys!!!! Edited by Damon - 06 Jun 2010 at 9:41pm |

there are no stupid questions!
well... maybe there are, but we are all friendly here
1. How do I hook up the dual cards to the monitor?
just hook it up as if there was not a second card
2. Which cable do I use for Max Resolution and Performance?
dvi and hdmi are pretty much exactly the same, flip a coin
3. Anyone have a picture of the cable and connection port to use?
lol im not sure exactly what youre asking here.. but if youre asking what dvi cable and connections look like...

Thanks!! Quote from review of u2711:
"In the box is the usual array of cables, including a dual-link DVI cable (the one with the full set of pins, allowing for increased bandwidth to cope with high resolutions), DisplayPort and D-Sub.
Around the back of monitor you’ll find pretty much every type of interface is catered for, with two HDCP-compatible dual-link DVI ports, a HDMI port (although no cable is included), DisplayPort, D-Sub, component and composite video."
So with this info, would I use one of the cables provided (and which one) or do I need to buy a different cable to get it to work best with the dual 480s??
Thanks for the help I really appreciate it!!!! (just trying to get te most out of the dual 480 cards and u2711 monitor!).
Let me know.
PS - actually what I was looking for with the picture was which port on the dual cards do I plug cable into. Edited by Damon - 07 Jun 2010 at 12:18am |

Cards in SLI are connected inside the PC, both through the PCIe lanes they're plugged into and by the SLI bridge which is plugged onto the outside of the cards as an additional connection.
You only have to connect the monitor to the primary (top) video card. For a 2560x1600 monitor you would connect the dual-link DVI cable to both of the DVI ports on the back of the primary video card. |

if your resolution is under 2560 x 1600 you don't have to worry about dual link dvi cables.
the only difference between hdmi and dvi is that hdmi can have sound also. the u2711 has a native res of 2560 x 1600 so you do need a dual link dvi-d cable, this cable's connections look like this:
top card left port or any card left port should do it. Edited by DST4ME - 07 Jun 2010 at 1:35am |

Lol, I guess I just have the good fortune of Damon being about a week or so ahead of me so he answers all the questions I know I would have had. :)
Thanks to all for the cable help. The native rez on a u2711 is 2560x1,440. Does this change your advice DST? Thank you all! Also, there is alot of marketing that this or that (i.e. Monster brand cables) are better than others. I think one of the questions Damon might have been asking is after dropping $3.5k +/- rig and $1k monitor, I don't want to be chincy on a $35 vs. $75 or so cable if in your all's advice one or the other cable was better. I suspect the difference is unnoticeable but figured as long as Damon was asking i'd jump on. Thanks all! --AOM Waiting for my build... .... ;) |

OMG, just got my rig and monitor today and finished hooking everything up....amazing so far!!!
One thing I noticed is I ordered the Red Internal light to match the front one, but the Memory Fan Kit is Blue :(. (DAMN)
Any way to turn off the memory kit light or get red lights?? (looks a little weird)
Let me know since I didn't realize the memory kits had a light. Edited by Damon - 10 Jun 2010 at 1:10am |
