For those that know. Is it true that the 2500K is better for games than 2600K?

100% false.
The 2600K is the better CPU for most games, and especially for future games.
The 2600K is typically higher binned, so on average you will ge higher overclocks.
The 2600K will always perform equal or better than the 2500K, because worst case scenario a game does 2% better with HT off, you can turn HT off with the 2600K, but you can't turn HT on on the 2500K.

Most newer PC games are using 6 Threads, some 12, some 4. The 2500K will only do 4, so if you are using a game that will use the heck out of 4 threads, that leaves you no room for background programs, so it will be like the old days running a single core CPU, and gaming, and the Antivirus starts up, and all hell slows down. lol
the 2500K is a great CPU, and the 2600K is $100.00 more, but well worth it in my opinion, but if the budget is too tight, the 2500K overclocked to 4.5Ghz+ is still a little powerhouse.

lol flashback of that hell

I agree, if you fit the budget go 2600K if not 2500K, IMHO the cpu is the brain of the pc, and I don't think any amount can be wasted on the brain being even a little smarter or faster, but thats just me.

I am planning to get a nice DS gaming machine, and the i5 2500k was looking good.

I thought most games did not use hyperthreading yet.

Was the comment about antivirus slowing the pc down serious? sorry to be clueless :)

games use hyper threading, for the most part. and most new games that I have tested will use 4-6 threads. some as high as 12 threads, and a few that used 2. lol
The Antivirus was aimed mostly at old single thread CPU's, when the Antivirus kicked in, it just over-took the PC. lol
Some new anti virus will allow you to select how many threads it will use, but for the most part, it not something to worry about.  If you have the 2500K and the AV started up when you were gaming, and te game was using most of your CPU power, there could be a slow down, depending on the preset priority of the AV program.

Like we said earlier, the 2600K is the one to get, but if the budget is too tight, the 2500K is still a very good choice.
I have had a 2600k for a while, and are getting a 2500K next week, so I am not prejudice on either one. lol Big%20Smile

OK,.. so what I have learned about the i5 2500K vs the i7 2600K isn't true??Confused

My previous post:
I am open to correction on this, but for more bang for your buck the i5 2500K is a better choice for gaming. From what I have read the i7 2600k will work fine but is only going to benifit you if your going to be doing alot of video processing or sound editing, stuff that actually benefits from Hyper Threading which does nothing for games. The i5 2500k is more suited for gaming. Again I'm open for correction on this as I have only been researching this stuff for a couple of months.
