Hey all,

So my girlfriend is looking to get a DS computer for xmas. She games with me a lot and so I'm looking to get her a beast of a machine. I bought myself a DS computer a few months ago and it was the best purchase I've ever made.

She does not play super graphic intensive games but would definitely like to be above the curve. She mainly plays games such as WoW, Sims3, or games like Dragon Age Origins. I was thinking about just getting her 1 video card to start out with and maybe add another one in later. The budget is 2700$ and I would like to maximize out on computer performance.

for the games she is playing, she won't need sli, however I included a 1000w corsair to do dual sli if she starts to play gpu intensive games.

if you don't see it in there its because its pointless.

HDD1 = fast small drive: os/apps/games

HDD2 = regular large drive: media/personal/work file storage

if think you will need more room for it then pick a bigger one.

Thanks DST4ME, Just a couple questions though.

1. Is there anything wrong with that particular case? She's obsessed with aesthetics and doesn't particularly like the HAF

2. Will the faster ram benefit me in anyway? We have 2700$ aside for the computer and want to use every last penny of it, so any other tweaks you could suggest would be great.

3. Why the stage 1 air cooling? I use the Noctua D14 in my HAF and it keeps things very very cool.

4.Any reason why the gtx 570 over the 580? I haven't done much research lately with the new video cards but I'm assuming the 580$ gives better performance.

I'm trying to make the system as future-proof as possible.

Thanks for your time

1. the haf 932 is bigger then that case but an inch shorter.

if thats what she likes then that what she likes, haf has a better price.

2. as I said, if you don't see it in there, its pointless, the difference you will see from ram is not going to be noticed.

3. d14 is a great cooler, but its only like 4c better then u12, but its up to you, my build is a base build of what you need, if you want to throw other stuff on there go ahead, but you won't notice much from my config.

4. the difference betwween 570 and 580 is not huge, and for the games she plays a 570 is more then enough.

btw I forgot to ask what res she gaming at?

your system is future proof, once I know the size of the monitor I can tell you better, but in the future if you need more gpu power you can add another gpu, or upgrade to the more powerful gpu of the future.

example, if this was last year, would you rather have gone with 2 x 275 which you would not have needed, or would you rather have gone with one 275 and put the money you saved from the second 275 toward a new 570/580 if it was needed? you can't really future proof cause specs and etc changes, last year a person might have though sli 275 is future proof, then comes 580/570 and dx11 and that person is kicking themselves in the ass for getting 2 x 275, cause they don't even support dx11, best future proof is to have the ability to add more gpu, then in the future should the need arrive, you add a newer gpu that can handle newer games better then a old sli setup. today a 580/570 gives you the performance of pretty much a 275 sli in one card plus dx11.

now its up to you. but I can tell you wow and games like that will not use the second card, nor will they need the second card.

the cooling woth the d14 is overkill you would be better with the other notcua cooler and a sound card.
also the gtx580 is marked up by $200 because of low supply so you would save a lot going down to the 480. the 580 has a few more cores, is quieter and saves a few watts but is not at all worth$ 230 extra like it is now.

Thanks for the input maxyme,

Where I live, temperatures can get pretty hot, and she will have the computer running a good few hours a day. I use the D14 and my temperatures have been very stable and I would not settle for less.

The asus mobo also comes with pretty good built in sound and since she isn't super crazy about having perfect sound, I feel that the soundcard would be overkill.

Thanks for letting me know about the gtx 580 price, I will definitely look into that.

Looks great, my only recommendations is to go with the ASUS Sabertooth x58 Motherboard, the P6X58D gives you no extra advantage or performance increase and costs more.

Just so you know, with the 750w Corsair, you will only be able to run 1x GTX580.

you didn't follow my build.

go back and pic 1000w corsair if you wan to be able to go sli in the future.

mobo is up to you, I like evga better, much better support, and it has good sound just like asus.

haf 942 is good but honestly 932 is all you need with bigger fans I think, but again , if you like the 942, then the 942 it is.

drop 580 you got nothing to gain here, I can come in the middle of the night and switch that 580 with a 570 and you would never notice the difference in those games. again its up to you, as long as you know its kinda of a waste.

again d14 is only 4c better then u12, so for example d14 gives you load temp of 70c, u12 gives you 74c, nothing huge there.

don't oc the gpu, you have nothing to gain but heat and noise.

drop the os boost, it makes no difference what so ever in app/games.

I like the rest of the changes.

so there you go, at the end get what you are happy, we are just providing info so you have all the facts before you make your decision.

oh nice catch on the system optimization and video oc.
the video oc will create a lot of noise and heat for little gains.
the system optimizasion isn't neccisarry bc it might disable things you need or some cool visual fx. plus win 7 is so optimized and with your hardware you wont need it.

Okay thanks for that,

I will drop the OS/Video boost.
I really don't plan on going SLI in the future the more I think about it. If anything I will just replace the card with a newer one.

I will check my video card every morning to make sure you didn't come swap it LOL.

But honestly, I know you both are right and I can save a bit of money by getting a 570 or the u12. But with the 15% promotion going on right now, I can still keep the computer price under 2700$ and add a little bit of an extra oomph, even if it's a bit overpriced.

I'll make the changes to my OS/Video boost and submit the order.

Thanks for the help guys!

Agreed on the 580, forgot to mention that, currently the market is overvaluing that card, and the price:performance ratio is not as good as that of the 570.

Just something to think about.
