Finally taking the dive.
Ticket# 428508 Have a budget of around 2800$ I have a 24 inch 1920 x 1200 monitor. Any suggestions are welcome. Would really like to stick with the 480GTX.I don't plan on running SLI in the future, I will stay single card. 750 enough power for my whole system? Edited by TechniKal - 03 Aug 2010 at 5:28pm |

i looked at this for over a minute straight before i realized that you were in black ops.. i couldnt understand how you possibly got to 2800 with that loadout
if thats what you want then go for it, but i think you could use 2800 WAY better
you spend $239 more dollars:
give up 40gb of ssd space (meaningless)
give up the case for one just as good or better
give up the front input to your sound card?
give up 3-6% cpu cooling power (thats being generous)
get an extra 480, with the psu you need

if you mean black ops vs special deals ..it used to be the warranty and some extra things like trim paint
the extras are now availible under special deals, and the wording of the warranty is exactly the same
so in my uneducated guess.. the only difference is the case selection?

Ahhh that makes sense. The only issues I have with getting SLI is the issues that come forth with compatibility with games and such.
I want to keep the sound card because I do watch movies on my computer. The front I/O doesn't really matter though. Does the EVGA board have 3 inputs for Sub/front/rear for 5.1 sound? If so I wouldn't need the sound card because there's plenty of overhead for the i7 to process that. |

i didnt mean to infer that you need to get SLI, just saying that in my opinion that amount of money could be much better spent. if youre looking to save the most with a single 480 build just drop the PSU to 750w and remove the extra 480, should take you down to about $2200
sound cards arent about taking load off the CPU any more, its about sound quality. the cpu will handle the sound load without even a measurable drop in performance, but onboard sound is not up to par with even some of the cheapest sound cards you can buy. if you have a good set of headphones/speakers, consider keeping the sound card. but to answer your question
it claims to support up to 8 channels

absolutely not, there are several topics with this inside it... really long story short: no. the results are not reliable with 2gpus vs 1 in the tests youll find from the 460...stick with at least 1 480

Am I going to be able to run my games at max with a single 480 at my native resolution? That's the only thing I am really worried about.
Anywhere to check benchmarks of 480 SLI to single card? |

same site, i use toms for almost everything
480s are more typically used for 2560x, so youre already a step below that which will help your 480s performance
the problem is that "max " settings is becoming a weighted term because maximum implys heavy use of AA/AF to some people... not to me
so without aa/af being high, at 1920x, im ok saying yes it will for right now
but dont be fooled by "max" settings especially with AA/AF... try it out with most games and you will find that bumping down the settings a little will jack up your framerate and you will likely see little to no eye candy difference

I've only skimmed through the thread but: Dual 460s will give a little higher average FPS than a single 480 but at the cost of significantly lower minimum FPS. Their FPS will be all over the place from high to super low which isn't fluid at all, plus some games just don't respond multi GPU setups well at all. So a single 480 is preferable, much more fluid frame rates and a single 480 is all you need to max all games at max settings at 1920x1200 or 1920x1080 except for 2-3 odd highly unoptimized games like Crysis and Metro 2033. But just turn their AA settings down and they're fine too. For that budget and resolution I would probably get: Ticket #428646, Price: $2387 Chassis Model: Special Deal Hot Seller - Cooler Master HAF 932 Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Trim Accents: - Standard Factory Finish Processor: Intel Core i7 930 2.8GHz (Quad Core) Motherboard: EVGA X58 LE Edition SLI (Intel X58 Chipset) System Memory: 6GB DDR3 1600MHz Digital Storm Certified Performance Series (Highly Recommended) (Hand Tested) Power Supply: 1200W Digital Storm Certified (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) (Silent Edition Highly Recommended) Expansion Bay: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 1: Operating System: 1x (80GB Solid State (By: Intel) (Model: X25-M MLC Edition) (Extreme Performance) Set 1 Raid Options: - No Thanks Hard Drive Set 2: Multimedia\Data: 1x (1TB Hitachi/Seagate (7200 RPM) (32MB Cache) Hard Drive Set 3: Backup\Misc.: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD-R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 24x / CD-Writer 48x) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Internet Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: 1x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 1.5GB (Includes PhysX Technology) Add-on Card: - No Thanks Sound Card: Integrated Motherboard Audio Extreme Cooling: AIR: Stage 2: Noctua NH-D14 Extreme Performance (Does NOT fit on the regular EVGA X58 3X SLI) H20 Tube Color:- Not Applicable, I do not have a FrostChill or Sub-Zero LCS Cooling System Selected Chassis Airflow: Standard Factory Chassis Fans Internal Lighting: Internal Chassis Lighting System (Red) Enhancements: - No Thanks Chassis Mods: - No Thanks Noise Reduction: - No Thanks Boost Processor: FREE: Stage 1: Overclock the processor between 3.3GHz to 3.9GHz (Cooling Upgrade Recommended) Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my memory Boost OS: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Virus Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: FREE: Hot-selling game with a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 or above graphics card Display: - No Thanks Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: - No Thanks Mouse: - No Thanks External Storage: - No Thanks Exclusive T-Shirt: FREE: Digital Storm T-Shirt - Black (Large) Priority Build: - No Thanks, Ship Within 5-15 Business Days After Order Is Successfully Processed Warranty: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty OS/apps and a few games on the SSD, rest of the games/movies/music/media on the HDD. That 1200w PSU can support dual SLI 480s, so if a year or two down the road you feel you need more graphics power you can buy and add in another one. Or of course just switch out the single 480 for something newer and more powerful altogether. If you prefer sticking with single GPU setups you may as well drop the PSU down to a 750w though. I know your budget was higher, but there isn't really much else to get without significantly ramping up the price. Better to just pocket the remainder for future GPU upgrades. But those are just my opinions. Opinions may vary. |

Keep in mind that the default front fan of the HAF 932 is a red LED fan. I mention this because you have the blue lighting selected. Some think the red fan with blue lighting behind it looks cool, some think it clashes and looks weird, but that'll be up to you.
