Topic: 280GTX going back to $600+?? Posted: 02 Sep 2008 at 12:56pm |
I was looking at newegg.com this morning and the XFX, BFG, PALIT cards all had price increases to $600+ over the weekend. I am thinking maybe all the manufacturers just had too much inventory since sales were less than expected, but now that they have cleared their inventory the prices are going to go right back up?
I wasn't planning to buy yet, but now am wondering if I should pickup an EVGA 280GX OC to 648 while I can still get it for $460.
Does anyone have any insight about what is going on?

Errrr it's probably appropriate to say.... "If Nvidia doesn't wanna get pwned by ATI, they best not raise it back to 600+"
Especially after all those reviews stating that reducing it to 400+ helped balance out your choices when it came to selecting GPUs for your gaming rig. |

I agree, at $600+ its just not worth it compared to ATI, but those are the prices as of this morning.
EVGA, Zotac, and MSI are still in the $400s but I am not thrilled with any of those. EVGA has had quality problems, Zotac sucks (my card constantly artifacts and looks like crap compared to my old ATI card), and MSI I just know nothing about.
Hopefully its temporary, maybe they just don't want to build inventory before the 55nm versions arrive (soon I hope).

I'm assuming the new GTX 260 will take the $400-$500 range =)

Has NVidia announced ship dates for the 55nm 260s and/or 280s?

No word on the die-shrink.
But Nvidia is enabling another cluster on the GTX 260. Just like what they did with the 8800GTS. Most GTX 260 owners are going to be very angry at Nvidia -.^ |

I took another look this evening and all the prices are back down in the $400s.
Go figure

Maybe I just got a marginal card. It has been perfectly stable so its not a real problem, just annoying mainly.
After an hour or so of Crysis, AOC, or FSX it artifacts quite a bit. It seems to be getting worse over time. SunfighterLC mentioned he had a similar problem with his 9800X2 and a 280GTX from Zotac.
Its maybe not be fair to judge an entire company on a couple cards, so I am glad to hear yours is working well. I am sure DSO wouldn't continue to offer them if there overall experience wasn't very good.

Have you increased your fan speed and see if it still artifacts?

Yes, I have tried setting the fanspeed to 100% with Rivatuner and it doesn't seem to make any difference. The card is running at stock speed.
I agree it does seem like it might be related to overheating, but the temperatures don't seem out of line - low 80s under heavy load (ATI Tools) per Rivatuner.
I am not too concerned about it, as I plan to upgrade soon anyway. I am just waiting to see what the 55nm cards are going to look like.
