Ok, time for an informal pole: Anyone out there running Vista 32-bit with 2G of RAM? And if so is it running smooth(gaming wise) or do you wish you had 3-4G instead?

I'm on the fence as far as how much RAM you really need with Vista 32, some say 2G is fine others say 4G is the way to go.

....looking for advice.

Thanks, Jeff

If I had the choice(money) I would have went with 3-4GB.

I have 2 GB and Vista on my laptop and there is no problem whatsoeverAll you really need is 2 GB bro.  Even the latest games aren't going to need any more than that, but if you're doing some incredibly large 3D picture rendering, I can't help you :)

Thanks for the reply Solo, I'm just concerned about gaming performance, the more I read on the internet about this matter the more confused I get.

So if 2G is really enough why would you say that if you had the choice you would go for 3-4G instead?

I have two gigs and games run fine.  More can be overkill with diminishing returns.  Know what's necessary for the your build.  More RAM, considering your OS and depending on what you'll be doing that would require more or less RAM, can give you little benefit.

What build are you looking at?  What do you plan on doing with your rig i.e, graphics programing, gaming... types of work?  That will dictate what your needs will be in your hardware.  32 bit OSs won't recognize much beyond two gigs.  64 bit OSs benefit from more than two gigs.

What the computer will be used for primarily is gaming and internet/e-mail access.
No real multi-tasking at all, and I don't tend to have any other aps running while gaming either

If you're going with Vista 32 bit, I would stick with 2 gigs.

There's really not much point in more than 2GB IMO. I tried installing a 3rd stick of RAM in my system just to see how much would be recognized, and I think it was 2.35GB. My GPU only has 256MB of RAM, so in a system with a GPU @ 512MB of VRAM, it's only going to get worse.

Just my opinion, but unless you're going 64bit, more than 2GB is pointless.

I would like more gigs of ram myself because im greedy like that, but as I said earlier bro its really not necessary.   2GB of ram will suffice for a long time with any game.

listen to EdH63.  he's right.  no reason to go w/ 4gb on a 32bit OS.  2gb is all you'll need.  see below.

2GB RAM is the sweet spot for Vista 32bit, you don't really need more.

Thanks all!  Thanks for clearing this little issue of mine up. I feel better about my decision to stay with 2G.
