My main purposes for this computer is gaming and I already have a 32-inch monitor 1920x1200 and keyboard/mouse/speakers so all I'm getting from here is the computer. With that being said my budget is around 1800-2000$ and I will be mostly playing CODMW BC2 SC2 WoW and The old republic when it comes out. Please include shipping in that budget. I can go a bit over if necessary I would rather get the most bang for my buck then skimp on something that would cost me 60 over the 2k mark.
Here is my current build so far and feel free to critique it. http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=440316%20 My main questions are whether or not the motherboard/videocard/processor/network card are all worth it together or if one bottlenecks another. Any input would be awesome and thank you all in advance :) |

I'm also wondering if a 40G SSD for the OS is worth it in comparison to the HD I chose. Thanks again :)

If you are going to spring for liquid cooling you might as well get the free overclocking service for at least the CPU.
I think the first bottleneck after processor and videocard is the harddrive. You might want to go for an SSD instead of the internet Killer thing, which I have heard reviews both for and against.
So I guess my only major suggestion would be thinking about swapping out the liquid cooler for a good air one, and getting an SSD instead of the killer gamer internet interface. But you should wait for more people to weigh in, I'm still new.
And I don't know anything about ATI cards as I did all my research in Nvidia.

Well Ive actually used the killer card and its pretty awesome in terms of evening out spikes but what kind of bad reviews has it gotten?
I updated the build with some of your recommendations so this is what it's at now. http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=440323%20 Edited by Epicloa - 12 Sep 2010 at 3:17pm |

ok theres several things we need to change here, for a few starters:
the i7 920 and 950 are the same processor, so the lower you can get the better, good way to save money
the 690 case design is pretty outdated these days, it uses 120mm fans which will usually be louder and not cool as well, id suggest picking the haf series cases for the best cooling, though most all of the cases that are more expensive than the 690 have a better design
the killer card is something that is a super intricate internet connection tweaker, id leave that out of the build until you finish everything else under budget
definitely no reason to not choose having a free overclock
read through the guide in my signature below for some more help/information
for a start, heres a config with better cooling, more gaming power, for less money

Is that the best case in your opinion?

honestly most of the cases outside of the 300, 400, and 600 series cooler masters are pretty close. air cooling plateaus very quickly, so unless you are crazy about every degree, choose the one you think looks the best
as far as best performance, id say the haf932 or hafx, but again, not that big of a difference

Alright thanks a ton does this build look better?
http://www.digitalstormonline.com/comploadsaved.asp?id=440330 Oh and would you take this air cooling over the liquid cooling or is it just personal preference? Edited by Epicloa - 12 Sep 2010 at 3:47pm |

its not that i prefer air cooling over liquid, those asetek coolers arent the standard "liquid cooling", they use water, but its not the same, its LCLC, low cost liquid cooling. basically meaning they found a way to implement water in thier cooling systems so that they would get a ton of attenion in the DIY and botique building world, but they dont cool better than the stronger air coolers
stage 3 cooling is real liquid cooling
looks pretty good to me, im not sure if there is much difference between the 32 and 40 gb intel drives, hopefully dragoon will chime in on that, the rest looks great

Thank you so much I like that you don't just say "do this this and this and badabing you have a great comp" you actually explain it which is definitely helpful to a hardware newcomer like myself lol
