I have been searching for a long....long while for a good gaming laptop and I finally came to the conclusion that why not ask people who actually know what they are talking about rather then just search aimlessly. Just reading over the reviews and policies of DS I knew this would be my company of choice, so pleeeeaaaase help me!!!
Budget: My budget is going to be $2,000 for this laptop, of course i'd prefer a little under but thats the limit. Expectations: I'd like to be able to play 3 main games with ultra settings and without having to deal with too much lag from college wifi, WoW, D3, and Skyrim. My school actually has pretty good wifi but just certain times of the day are a pain. Didn't know if there was any way to improve that. Usage: I'm going to be using this computer for college and gaming Specifications: I would prefer a 17" over a 15" but if it can't be done then so be it. I have a large Blu-ray collection so BR player is a must, don't need the reader/writer combo though. I'd also like to use a hybrid hard drive because i like the space on them... and i think that's it. |

Welome to the forums! You have definitely come to the right place for a gaming laptop.
With your specifications here is a laptop that I would recommend: Chassis Model: Digital Storm x17 Laptop (Model: 9170) Display: 17.3 Inch (16:9) (Resolution: 1920 x 1080) (Glossy Surface) LED-Backlit Display Processor: Intel Core i7 3630QM (2.4 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.4Ghz) (Quad Core) (6MB Cache) Thermal Compound: Stock CPU and GPU Thermal Compound Memory: 16GB DDR3 1600MHz (4x4GB Sticks) Primary Hard Drive: 750GB Hybrid 7200RPM with 8GB SSD (SATA 3Gb/s) Secondary Hard Drive: - No Thanks Optical Drive: Blu-Ray Player (Blu-Ray 6x) & DVD/CD Writer Wireless Card: Intel Advanced-N 6235 Wireless LAN + Bluetooth Combo Module Video Card(s): AMD Radeon HD 7970M 2GB Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) Warranty Plan: Life-time Expert Customer Care with 3 Year Limited Warranty Cost: $1986 The CPU is more than enough to handle everything out there right now. 16GB of RAM isn't really needed for gaming but it's cheap right now, and a little more RAM is never really a bad thing. Hybrid drive like you specified. Bluray player like you specified. The 7970M is a great graphics card that will perform really well, nearly the same as the nVidia 680m for a lot less. Should play most games smoothly on high-ultra settings. Your choice of windows 7 or 8. I can't recommend the DS x17 enough, if you have any other questions or comments about this build I'd be happy to help!

The difference between the two build is the graphics card. The 7970m I put down is better than the 675mx, benchmarks show that the 7970m is about 10-30% better than the 675mx, depending on the benchmark.
Although those benchmarks may not mean real world performance, in most games the 7970m shows higher framerates than the 675mx. I believe that most people would agree that if you have the budget to include the 7970m you should go for it, after all that's the center of a gaming computer. It also gives you some more future headroom. |

You are the best :D and does the wireless card not make much difference?
same for the cooling compound? or was that a budget thing. |

I don't think the wireless card makes a big difference. I have the Killer card and I haven't really noticed any change over a network card.
Also the thermal paste can lower temps over the standard. I originally had the IC Diamond when I bought my laptop but when I had to change the GPU out I just repasted with some Artic Silver Ceramique2. The IC Diamond runs a few degrees cooler than the ASC2, and likely much cooler than the standard thermal paste. If you are comfortable repasting your laptop parts than I wouldn't bother with the IC Diamond, but if you want the best cooling without having to do any repasting than I would say go for the IC Diamond. |

I'm not sure if they do a student discount as a lot of their systems already get a decent reduction. I play all those games you mentioned BTW and you'll love them on that laptop. A side note - the GPU is strong enough to push to a TV display.
