I am past due for a new computer, I thought the one I am using was 4 years old but I just looked at the certificate of ownership that Digital Storm sent with this one I'm Using and I ordered it September 2010. I guess that says much about the quality and value you get with a DS system. It has been flawless but I'm ready to upgrade. First off I am not a gamer, just a surfer, I don't store large amounts of anything but I like to do what I do with good quality fast equipment but not break the bank. I have configured what I think is a machine that will suit my needs so I'm looking for some feedback

960 is the newer better version.
Change cpu cooler to air cooler Does amd have turbo boost? You don't need the extra fans fyi but if like them then that is cool |

I can change the SSD, thanks for the tip. Why the air cooler though? Yes it does have the boost and I like lots of lighting, dresses up my corner of the room.

Because air cooling last a long time, liquid cooling might need replacing early and life is limited, no reason to deal with all that if you don't need/have the stress

Hi, msizelove, welcome back to DS! I have a DS vintage May 2010 that I'm upgrading from, too.
From what I've read, it seems to me the Ryzen 7 1700 or 1700X might be an alternative to think about. That 1800X is a beast that you may not ever stretch with your use. Just a thought. Also, the whole AMD alternative is pretty new here, and I'm not sure DST4ME is aware there's no upgraded air option for that line. He's absolutely right about the advantages of air cooling, but I've never seen stock air recommended on these forums before. Just sayin'.

Don't they use the Wraith cooler for amd? For surfing the cpu is never stressed enough to get warm.

Thanks for the info guys, I really agonize over builds before I pull the trigger, the old one I think I spent 3 months or better before deciding but guess I did well as I'm typing this on it. Anyway I have been playing around with the intel builds as well, so what does this one look like to you. I know before you tell me that I am buying more processor than I will ever need but that is my nature, I prefer to idle and have lots to spa

Actually if you want a pc that feels powerful to you 6 years from now i would recommend the 8700k.
Drop the oc and go with turbo boost and highest air cooler. Drop oc from gpu also. I got the 1050 ti for a family member who only surfs/watches videos and it is way more then what they need, no oc and they love it. Go with 960 pro for best quality. Edited by DST4ME - 19 Dec 2017 at 6:39pm |

I dropped the overclocks and will give the processor a mild one myself just because. Went to air but I'm not real proud of their options for that, what I have on this one is the Coolermaster V6 GT and it is great. Went up to the 960 Pro and I think this is pretty solid build. Getting cold feet with the Ryzen, just doesn't have the track record. Thanks for the advice, gonna sleep on and likely pull the trigger tomorrow.

Trust me the turbo boost is great on 8700k, you won't need to oc it yourself, unless you really want to
If you are up to it, get the base air cooler and drop a noctua in it yourself, but again IMHO for your use (surfing) i don't see need for it. Edited by DST4ME - 19 Dec 2017 at 7:35pm |

That cooler is actually Coolermaster Hyper 212 Evo, I believe. It's been around awhile, but it's always gotten high marks, and compared well with many all-in-one liquid coolers. The multiple copper pipes make direct contact with the heat spreader under that base. Maximum PC magazine's favorite for price/performance for a long time. So, better than it looks.
Very nice build for you BTW. Edited by Cretae - 20 Dec 2017 at 8:53am |

It is good why I told him to go for it, but if he wants higher oc then lc is best way to go, otherwise noctua is king. Forget maximum pc and places like that, take all of reviews from sites like that with a big grain of salt. Always look at credible sites's (multiple sites) benchmark and come to your own results based on concensus of those results and your own experiences.

I have looked at pretty much everything and everyone. Matter of fact Cyberpower is located 10 blocks from where I work so I called them and they told me sure come on over and pick out what I want and they would build it that day or the next and I could pick it up. That was a red flag as obviously no one checks to see if components play nice with each other and testing is plug it in and see if it runs. Not what I want, I can do that. My existing DS computer has been flawless but I truly cannot comment on their customer service as I have never needed it. But that is how I like it so here I am again.

I just pulled the trigger and ordered the intel build with just a couple minor changes that you guys recommended. I really wish microsoft would have stopped with windows 7 because how could they improve on that, now I have to learn 10. Anyway now the hard part---waiting. Thanks for your suggestions. |

I've been thinking about upgrading my monitor, I had intended to use the 27" Asus that i have but I want to go to a 32". I have looked at literally everything and am having a really hard time deciding ( I feel like a woman), But am just about to zero in on the Samsung S32D850T. The specs on the video card says it will support the 2560x1440 resolution but I guess I'm looking for reassurance or maybe a suggestion for something else. Any Thoughts?

If you went with that 1050 card, I'd wait to get an opinion on whether that card can drive that many pixels even with your relatively undemanding use. I'm just reminding everyone that you're not gaming.
Oh, the good news is that Samsung makes its own panels, so quality control is all on them. Edited by Cretae - 07 Jan 2018 at 3:45pm |

It is not about monitor size it is about resolution.
At 1440p a 1050 is going to have issues you need to turn settings down for games and see how it does. Otherwise you can go 4k with 1050 if not gaming and you are not gaming so you are good Edited by DST4ME - 07 Jan 2018 at 6:29pm |

Before you get that samsung i ask you to look at dell ultrasharp IPS panels.
A good IPS is where you want to be, va is not as good. Edited by DST4ME - 07 Jan 2018 at 6:33pm |

An Ips is what I want but Im a bit lost on this. I have looked at literally almost everything but all seem to have something positive as well as bad. It would be great to see them working then the choice would be easy. Looked at Phillips, Veiwsonic, LG , BenQ, as well as others. Been back and forth on resolution as well. One thing for sure is a dealbreaker is not having the 3 year warranty. I would prefer a glossy screen rather than a matte. I know the VA is a compromise between the TN and the IPS but is it that much worse?

Ips is king for your use the dell ultrasharp is great, i have a few and love them but because they are great they little pricey, check them out and take reviews with a grain of salt, ask us ips owners here.

IPS for the win here also. Have a Dell UltraSharp and love it. There are a ton of screens to pick from. For me, ips first, then 1440p at 144hz for next monitor.

Have both Asus PG278QR (tn) and PG279Q (ips). the 279 is much better visually. Love it. Have not noticed any lag or bleed but I'm no pro.

Yeah me. Just got the stage 4 and stage 5 emails. If lucky my rig will get here late next week. Decided finally to go with the Asus VA32AQ monitor. No matter what I looked at there were tradeoffs and this finally was the one that best suited my needs and was in the range I am willing to spend.

I also wanted IPS as that is what i am currently using, but the Samsung I was considering was rated very high even though it was a VA. Just one more question: is usb3 backward compatible? I was looking at the motherboard online and it only has a couple usb2 sockets in the back of the case and I need 3 to hook up my keyboard, mouse and printer. Yes I'm old school and the tower is at my right elbow so I see no reason to go wireless with those things.
