Topic: 2nd GPU for streaming & gaming Posted: 23 May 2019 at 11:14pm |
Budget:
Moderate.. don’t need to get crazy Expectations: Run streamlabs obs, discord and games at a high quality output Usage: Streaming and playing games like Apex Legends / Rocket League / COD Specifications: I recently bought the Digital Storm VANQUISH 7 - Level 1 with the AMD Ryzen 5 2400G CPU with the integrated Vega 11 GPU. I’m brand new to the Performance PC world and wanted an easy entry point. I’m interested in a secondary GPU to help facilitate a better streaming output while maintaining the performance of the game. Currently I have to turn the output resolution way down and the output video is still dropping frames and not matching the native game resolution. Any help or suggestions are GREATLY appreciated. Thank you and I’m happy to provide any other information you may need! |

Congratulations and welcome to DS. The best pairing with that cpu appears to be the GTX 1060 6GB. Be aware that once the gpu is installed the onboard graphics (from the cpu) will be disabled. You will have to connect your monitor to the gpu. You will see a definite improvement in performance. Enjoy.

That used to be the most economical choice to improve graphics for a Vanquish 1. Now, for around the same price ($220-ish), Nvidia offers the new GTX 1660 which outperforms by about 12% or so. They also offer the 1660 Ti, which is almost 20% better than that for another $60.
The 1060 has been moved to the side. You could put anything you want in there up to an RTX 2070 just FYI. Beyond that, you don't have enough power supply. The GTX 1660 or 1660 Ti will do what you want at the lowest prices. |

This is great! Thank you! Should I be looking for a specific brand? I see the 1660’s from gigabyte, Asus, MSI

Thank you! I ended up with the MSI GTX 1660ti .. it has a 8 pin power plug.. and just looking at the motherboard.. I want to make sure I’m locating everything correctly.. i assume i need to pull a plug from the board to put in the new GPU. I’m just want to make sure I’m moving the right stuff because there doesn’t seem to be a 8pin currently there . Help!

You don’t pull a plug from the motherboard, but instead locate a 6+2 connector from the wiring from the power supply. Should be at least one close by, tywrapped in the wiring. 6+2 refers to a 8 pin cable that has the ability to unhook a 2 pin section in cases where a 6 pin only is needed. The graphics card plugs into a motherboard slot, then hook the 6+2 cable for power.
Go to View Our Support Guides forum and there’s an excellent post on installing a video card. Good luck. |

Excellent choice, Harter, you're gonna like your results!
@hoserator: what GPUs did you decide on, Bud? What CPU for your build? |

I upgraded my Aventum with 2 () EVGA RTX 2080Ti FTW3 Hydro copper in NVLink ( took out the 4 GTX980s - no longer playing my favorite game on max settings). It has an excellent 5960X cpu. Good for another 4 years, I hope. I also built a pc for a friend (he installed the software) with an 8086 and 2 RTX 2080Ti XC Hybrids. All are working with max settings. BTW I used a Noctua NH-15S and the cpu will not go over 43C!. All the above was with knowledge garnered here. I might have to get one of those $K monitors now! lol

You, sir, have excellent memory. Indeed, that is an old comment! As I told another poster recently, it was and is very satisfying to be able to work on a pc. It sure beats my constant bloody knuckles from working on bigger things mechanical. Thanks for the positive comments and sorry to the OP for semi hi-jacking the post. I watched the video on installing a graphics card but it doesn’t show where the power supply is that I need to plug into the new Gpu? I don’t have an existing dedicated Gpu since it’s just integrated with the cpu. I may be missing something !

Maybe you have to open the back door (panel) and check for the cable bprat22 stated. I don't know how your case looks but you might also want to check the back of the psu to see if there is one connected. I would doubt there is not one ready. If all that fails, look inside the box you got with the pc for the cable. keep us posted. .
