all the memory we use at DS are paired memory sticks meaning 2x1GB. So unless you were using 667, I would have to say no. Besides, I don' t even know if 1GB of the dom's would work properly? I could be way off as I havent' tried it.

Exactly. Kelly is on the ball. You also need to do a pair match if you want to take advantage of the "dual" channel bandwidth from memory.

slots on mobos are paired as well. If you paired a set of 1gb each, and then a pair of 512's it works.
edit: all of them would have to be the same speed/timings in order to make sure they worked at optimum speed... forgot to add that Edited by ed1371 - 16 Oct 2007 at 11:58pm |

You can do a set of 512MB DIMMs, but it seems a bit of a waste to me. You'll spend 60-65% of what it would cost to get a 2GB pair when you go with performance RAM anyway. Then if/when you decide that you want to step up to a 64 bit OS (which I think is going to continue growing quickly in support and popularity) you'll end up wanting to replace the 512MB DIMMs.
If you don't feel 2GB is enough RAM, I would probably just drop in 4GB and be done with it. Let the system detect what it's going to, and have that little bit extra waiting for a 64bit OS from the get go.

you are exactlly right tyler. I wouldnt do it that way either but was just saying it is possible. Much easier/smarter in the long run to just go with 4

Then, why does Crysis's developer have 1.5 RAM as a recommend spec with Vista as an operator system?
Sounds like to me with Vista 3GB of RAM should be possible. I don't know how that would work the motherboard limitations. As usual, confusing.. |

its kind of like the average amount of children a family has in the US is 1.5!
Its entirely possible, however more doesnt always mean better. Games just arent pushing ram requirements past 2 gigs (yet)

3gb of RAM is a very common offering - I was actually quite surprised that DS didn't have it as an option. Heck, even Gateway has a "free upgrade to 3gb" on their FX530. They'll slap in 2 512mb sticks. |

I was under the impression that the memory for the video card counted in for the total ram a 32-bit OS would recognize, so that if you had, say, an 8800 GTX, you can really only use another quarter ram. Or am I totally off?

You're not completely off, no. It depends on your total system specs, and how many adresses need to be reserved. You may end up with anywhere between say 2.25 to 2.75GB if you have a higher end graphics card installed in SLI. You *shouldn't* see much, if anything, less than 3GB with a single GPU installed; depending on: VRAM, and the other devices in your system.
If you SLI cards w/ 1GB of VRAM which is no doubt in my mind coming very soon, you might actually go under 2GB of adresses available for system RAM in an 32-bit OS environment. Then consider the new Tri-SLI configurations when 780i hits.... It starts to look pretty grim for the 32 bit OS.
This is one reason I see 64 bit gaining more and more ground.

I pretty sure they would if that is what you wanted in your computer, "special request" or something(not the free upgrade though).
question, when things run in the background, doesn't that take up RAM as well? If it does, I see why gateway gives a free upgrade. My sisters husband has a gateway he bought so he could play game's. He has so much running in the background, I think he actually does have 3 or 4 gigs of ram in that sucker, but you should see all the crap that was running in the background right after he bought the stupid thing.

Definitely - I've had great success with Dell, but this time around I was ready for a much better system. I looked long and hard at their XPS 720, but what end up tipping me over to DS was:
For any big box or mainstream computer, I recommend the De-Crapifier to anyone I know who buys one.
Originally, it was called the "Dell De-Crapifier", but Dell kindly asked them to stop.

Dell de-crapifier LOL. They actually asked them to change the name? You would think they would of learned something from that. What I don't undestand is that all the other company's, such as Dell, VM, etc etc use all that crap such as trials, bloatware, etc etc. If your ordering a gaming PC, you would think those companies would use some common sense. |

It's all money - they get paid for including that software.
