Once I get my DS computer I will have 2 monitors but it is very possible I will get 3 sometime and I'm wondering how that would work. I know the GTX 480 has 2 monitor inputs but how would you do three? Would i need another gfx card? Thanks for the help guys.

Actually i just found out there is a way to use more then 2 monitors on 1 gfx card! You can connect the monitors via usb. http://www.displaylink.com/displaylink_hardware.html
Currently its only avalible via USB 2.0 so it flickers a bit and is a little choppy sometimes but soon USB 3.0 Support is coming and it will be faster then the current dvi adapter speed! http://www.pcworld.com/article/185471/ces_displaylink_says_usb_30_video_coming_soon.html |

If you are just trying to add another monitor for normal desktop use and not gaming you could just get a $30 8400gs or something. in fact you could get most any cheap card you want as windows 7 supports 2 graphics drivers (just make sure the CARD is windows 7 compatible). I have a ati 5870 as my main card and an 9800gtx as a second card running my second monitor. I needed the second card as the ati's 2d clocks were poopy (causing flicker) and i don't know how to modify bios yet.

Just plug both monitors in to the card then go into Nvidia/Ati control panel and use the settings that merge the two monitors (to behave as one). But gaming on 2 monitors would stink as the monitor bezels would be obviously right in the middle. |

No, to game on 3 monitors you need 2 cards with Nvidia. With ATI you could game 3 monitors with 1 card.

No, you need 2 cards to game on 3 monitors (using Nvidia cards).
EDIT: lol, triple near-simultaneous answers. Edited by JJJJ_Shabadoo - 11 Sep 2010 at 7:15pm |

ATI's new thing is eyefinity http://www.amd.com/us/products/technologies/ati-eyefinity-technology/Pages/eyefinity.aspx
You hook both dvi and then use the display port. Edited by AndydViking - 11 Sep 2010 at 7:20pm |

ok i have to admit that is very very tempting. Even though i really like nvidia more then ati. With what they showed on the site like gaming on one screen and browsers and stuff on the other 2 is that still possible with nvidia using 2gpu's? I'm using an ati 3200hd and when i open a game the other screen shows what was open but when i click something on that screen it exits the game. It says that doesn't happen with eyefinity would it with dual gtx 480's?

You really gonna still need 2 cards (or 5970) anyhow w/ ATI for most games because of the processing power it takes to display across 3 monitors. If you like Nvidia just go with that. Plus I think you need to buy an active display port adapter for standard ati cards to make 3 monitors work (DON'T QUOTE ME HERE because I think some things are changing that).
http://techgage.com/article/amd_updates_us_on_eyefinity_announces_30_cable/ Just go Nvidia if that what you like IMHO. |
