I upgraded while in your same build stage from a 3070 to a 3080 after thinking about future proofing. The 3090 is crazy money but I was tempted by the 3080ti which is effectively a cheap 3090 from a gamer performance standpoint.

The 3070 excels at 1440 and plays 4K, the 3080 does great at 4K but not as great as the 3080ti or 3090.

The 3080ti is still something I wonder about but I went with the 3080. I don't think that the 3090 would be worth the crazy money over the 3080ti unless you had commercial video processing requirements.

I most likely went overboard with the 3080 but I am satisfied with my decision. For me the 3080ti was more crazy then I felt when I hit the order button. :-)

To me, it kinda depends on how soon you might get to upgrade to the next level GPU. If you would be very likely to affford an upgraded GPU in 2-3 years, then stick with the 3080 here.   If you might have to wait longer than 2-3 yrs for that next GPU upgrade, then I would go 3080Ti as that extra performance will likely keep you very happy for a bit longer.

I made a similar decision on a 1080Ti years ago and that strong GPU was included in Ray Tracing when NVidia brought in that upgrade for the 2000 series, and it still serves very well in one of my rigs.

Check here:

The online consensus I've seen is that the 3080 Ti is a disappointment and not worth the huge premium. The next gen is out inside 10 months and promises another leap forward from here. HockeyBuck makes a good point.

Great advice. I’ll stick with the 3080.
