Topic: 3770k vs 4770kPosted: 19 Jun 2013 at 6:26pm |

As some of you know I've been awaiting my 900d case to arrive at DS for them to start my rig, however lately I have been seeing ALOT of customers recently purchasing the i7 4770k and z87 Sabertooth or other Asus chipset. My build includes the i7 3770k OC'ed stage 1 and the Asus Maximus Extreme V chipset(z77)...
Question is, should i keep my config or will it be outdated soon? I chose the 3700k because of it's stability with heat and OC'ing, and information on this would be great as if im going to switch id need to do it ASAP before my rig is built. thanks! |

Ivy Bridge will not be outdated anytime soon, so have no fear on that front. The 4770k seems to be about a 10-15% performance increase over the 3770k, but runs hotter. Its ultimately up to you if it is worth the extra expense and heat for the performance increase of the 4770k. While Z87 doesn't OC as high as Z77, its important to keep in mind that a 4.2Ghz on Z78 is about the same as 4.5Ghz on Z77.

Well I have to say Tidgxor, I just built the SAME system with a 4770k and z87 Sabertooth chipset with all the cooling necessary for Stage 1 OC, and it's 150$ cheaper than with the 3770k and z77 board? I'm thinking I should change my order before my system is built, as I'm still waiting for my case....

Very interesting, not sure why it would be cheaper, but I'd recommend making the change. Even if we are extreme and say that the heat of the 4770k makes it no better than the 3770k (which is false), its certainly no worse, and you'd save 150$ in the process.

Well that's why I'm confused I asked the rep today and he said it was more expensive, but I just configged the SAME build with the 4770k and z87 board and it's cheaper with everything? I'm thinking i should change this tmr, will they refund me and change the order?

A big chunk of the cost difference is coming from the differences in the motherboards (Sabertooth vs Maximus V Extreme). As for the price differences, you'll have to speak to DS directly about that, I can't speak for them in this regard.

It seems like that's the case, yet if the z87 boards perform better and I'm getting a liquid cooled chipset anyways, why would I go with a more expensive older chipset and cpu? I sent them an email and am going to call in the am. I see alot of new users going with the 4700k and sbertooth z87 or other asus board

If you are getting a brand new computer, I would personally go with Haswell. I do not believe Haswell is worth the upgrade from Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge if you already have them. But in your case its a new PC, plus its cheaper. So I'd have done the same in your shoes.

well if the new config is going to save me 150$ and bump me into a z87 chipset and 4770k, then i'm going to do it. I'm running SLI 570 OC'ed right now as far as GPUs, they do fine. I'm pretty sure SLI 770s OC'ed will work well for me.

Do you need such a high grade cooling system?
I thought a 4770K would be cooled fine with something like a Corsair H100i. And you could use the money saved there to upgrade to 2 x 780 graphics cards. I am doing that and request DS to use the EVGA superclocked with EVGA ACX coolers. No need for a fancy loop. Good case fans are all that's needed for a basic ~4.2GHz 4770K overclock. ....unless you plan to really really really overclock the tits off everything. Or it's just for looks/to show off ;) I have also specifically requested an ASUS Z87-DELUXE motherboard. Has great features like wifi and optical out audio. I'm hearing bad things about the saber tooth and its thermal armor actually trapping heat and dust. See my build here if you're interested. Cheaper than yours and the 780 cards will kick ass http://www.digitalstormonline.com/forums/4000-build-advice-please-tidf20480/ Edited by ScottishBattleAx - 20 Jun 2013 at 3:47am |

Did anyone get a system yet from DS and asked for the 4.0-4.4 overclock on the 4770k? I am wondering what you ended up getting. 4.2? On reading more about it that seems to be the baseline before things start getting tricky and running into the bad luck parts.

Oh, and why did you get 1866 mhz memory and not ask for memory overclocking? Is it something that can be done easily ourselves?

4.2 on the 4770K seems to be about the norm, and you have to remember that this is equivalent to about 4.5 on the old 3770K

The liquid cooling I've wanted for a while now, not just for it's looks but for its advantages for future OC'ing. The 770s SlI will be fine for me as im running SLI 570s now and have almost no issues with most games at full settings.
as far as the motherboard, i may take your advice and request that chipset, they only give you a limited amount of boards which the sabertooth z87 board was the best. 1833mhz was a mistake that i didnt catch, and unfortunately DS has not mentioned anything to me about it...lately I've been weary about my original order and wish they had advised me differently... |

I didnt request for nor would use an OC for RAM, it'll save me just that much more $$ too..overall savings with my new 4770k config i saved about 220$ with a better system, idk how, they didnt advise me until i did alot more research waiting for my case.

Memory Overclocking has very little gain in most situations. And by overclocking, I mean pushing it beyond its specs, some people refer to 2100Mhz RAM at 2100Mhz as "overclocked" since it is running higher than base specs, I do not.
Of the three most commonly overclocked items, RAM overclocking has the least benefits by far. This is one of the reasons DS no longer offers it as a standard option anymore. |

Just me, being minimalistic, but with everything under water, you don't need the fan upgrade, fan control or noise package. Unless its for looks which it will certainly add a lot of. Everyone likes a great looking rig.
Just thinking out loud. That is a very nice rig. Congrats. Edited by bprat22 - 20 Jun 2013 at 12:03pm |

The 4770K runs hotter, so better cooling is a must for good overclocking.

Looks good.
Can they even get the 4770K to 4.5GHz? Why not get windows 8? Doesn't the case come with its own fans? Do you need to add the corsair ones? What sound improvement does the sound card give over the deluxe motherboards onboard sound? I see no text in the special instructions? How did you special order the motherboard/get a quote/pay for it? Edited by ScottishBattleAx - 20 Jun 2013 at 12:15pm |

I believe the most is 4.4 for the 4770k
I hate windows 8 lol Case comes with fans however the style and performance of the corsairs are much better, bigger and I can control with the LCD temp fan controller Motherboard I'm sticking with the ASUS sabertooth. The rep on the phone said that was the best board for z87 the others were cheaper and not as good. The reservoir I ordered special as shown in the main hailstorm 2 image I never liked the onboard sound, I have 5.1 speakers it should work nicely And I just saved 200$ with the new Haswell config Edited by Nerek387 - 20 Jun 2013 at 12:30pm |

Not sure about the motherboard... The ASUS Z87-Deluxe is definitely better than the Sabertooth. It also has on board ac wifi and 6 channel sound with optical out. The Sabertooth doesn't look bad, but no way is it the best Z87 board. Go to ASUS website and use the compare function. It is however probably one of the best Z87 boards that Digital Storm list as a standard option.

Awesome, although one thing you won't know what DS disables on the OS until you actually need something and can't find it. Something to think about.

I'm pretty savvy when it comes to programs and hardware...I tweak it all myself to disable nonsense programs,etc...there's always Google :-). Scottish did you ever find out if they were to order the delux z87 board for you?

No I haven't ordered anything yet, however during live chat they said they could order in the deluxe motherboard if I requested it. Same as they said they could order me specific 780 cards (EVGA superclocked versions with ACX coolers)

Ah...thosr are special order I can't afford to wait any longer for my system it's already been 2 weeks since I started building ...the sabertooth should work fine for me with h2o cooling and upgraded fans, my system is stage 3 now with the new Haswell build.I'm glad I didn't drop a ton of money on an older ivy bridge board
