Hi All,
I have put together a couple of build configs thanks to alot of good advice from DST4ME. I have been doing some reserarch, and there really didnt seem to be any appreciable difference between the X and K only a couple of fps or points on sysmark etc...and the difference in cost is $500 bucks...
I am interested in getting into some overclocking, but the K chip is also "unlocked" to any of the Big Brains out on this board know of a real reason to stay with the X over the K? I am thinking I could use that 500 bucks for a Stage 6 LC...or some other goodies...
Thoughts?

Hi BeerHunter,
The main difference between the two CPUs is the L3 Cache. The 3960X has 15MB and the 3930K has 12MB. I doubt you will see any performance difference when gaming. The 3960X is clocked slightly higher but that difference goes away when you OC. To me the $500 saving makes the most sense if you want the X79 platform. Unless you are going Tri-SLI I would stick with the 2600k. Frank Edited by FrankW - 15 Nov 2011 at 12:43pm |

Thanks Frank, that is what I am leaning towards...I just want to make sure I am not missing something. I knew some of the serious guys would know the practical differences.
Thanks for weighing in.

With the X79 being a new platform we don't have a lot of information about the 3960X and 3930K performance. Until we see a bunch of comparison test with different games there is no way to know how their performance will shake out. I just don't think for gaming there is going to be much difference, if any.

the X is gonna be a little bit more powerful, it has more cache and unlocked multiplier, do for regular folks the multiplier does not mean much.
