Budget:
<3k - I Plan to buy in the next few days. Expectations: Gaming machine with longevity. I plan to add a second card later. I will be adding storage later (no raid). I will be connecting to a Monitor sometimes and a television sometimes. Usage: Gaming of all types. Special Needs: I want a plain case, No lights, no bling. I want something quiet as this will be sitting in my family room, but I expect it to be a bit noisier while I'm gaming and that is OK. I'm especially concerned with cooling. I'm not sure if the noctua c9oler is better than what I have chosen. I'm also not sure what to overclock and not overclock, so I would appreciate any advice there. Hi phenolic72.... That is a real nice build.
Couple of things....... I would drop the ram to standard 1600mhz. Unless you're running really intense ram apps the higher ram clock is not needed and might mess with overclock and just generate heat. The higher clock for gaming isnt needed. The 550d is a nice case and very quiet. The h100i cooler mounts under the top with its rad and two fans and requires the top acoustic panel to be left off. Some of the quiet disappears. But it does increase airflow in the case. If you want quiet then the Vortex 120 or Hyper 212 air cooler would be the way to go. They exhaust out the back. The Noctua will not fit the 550d at DS. For sli graphic cards I would go with a case with better airflow but the 550d does have mounts on side panel for added fans if needed. Good luck. Edited by bprat22 - 14 Jun 2013 at 3:03pm |

@bprat22 - Thanks very much for the reply. I'm not sold on this case, but I do like the fact that it is plain. Can you recommend a case (or cases) with better airflow? I was also looking at the following system earlier, but I don't know if it is any better for airflow.

I'd also go with either an i5 3570k or i7 3770k if your only gaming, they're much better at OC'ing. I've heard the Haswell chips aren't the best...

phenolic72...... The Virtue is based on the new Corsair 350d if you want to google and check it out. The case follows the trend of smaller cases and has very good reviews. I would however ask DS in special optiins to add the second 140mm Corsair silent fan to the front for nice airflow. It comes with one and has a mount for the second. Probably $20-25 extra.
The best air flow case is the HafX for example with its side panel 200mm fan blowing air directly onto cards and mobo. Plus it can hold the larger Noctua cooler. But, what you have will work fine. Depends what works for your tastes. The UV light tubes won't work with the sealed units like Vortex or h100i. That UV interacts with stage 3 and above with true water cooling. Not sure if the internal light strip option fits with smaller cases. If Alex sees this maybe he can chime in. Your rig looks great. Solid and reliable. Good luck. Yes we can fit the internal lighting on the smaller cases.

Thanks to everyone for your help. I'm excited about ordering this today or tomorrow unless there is an issue with this build. I have a few final questions which I have included in bold red inline below. One note, I have decided to go with the Virtue case. The HAF X is simply too big for the space I have, and the Virtua still will allow me to add another SLI card in the future. EDIT: I will also be requesting the extra case fan as bprat22 suggested.

Stick with what you have. The Corsair has an established track record, tge Noctua probably won't fit and you don't need the fan or noise upgrade.
Change your internal light strip to a color instead of UV. The UV is for a different cooling system. Good luck. |

I just wanted to update this post since I've received my machine. I am very pleased. It is very nice, very quiet, and the perfect size box for my needs. I've thrown everything that I can at it and it doesn't seem to notice. I'm particularly impressed with how quiet it is, even when I'm playing something like Bioshock Infinite.
The only disappointment I had was that the packaging had come loose inside the main box during shipping, and the machine had been beaten up a bit. The front bezel had a broken clasp and was loose from the machine. DS is sending me a new front, but not being super familiar with these types of components, I have no way of knowing whether there might be some hairline cracks (or something similar) in a PCB or other component which might cause issues down the road. As I stated, I'm very pleased, but this did take a bit of the fun out of opening the box. One other note for anyone buying this case (Virtue) - the cabling barely fits on the side of the box where it feeds through. Because of this, the case bulges out a bit on that side at the top. This is not an issue for me, but might be for others who are more particular. @BPrat - thanks again for all of your help and advice. I feel confident this machine will last me quite a while and you provided some really good direction. |

Hi phenolic72.... Sorry to hear of the damage. Chances are your other components are good to go. Damage to boards, etc usually show right away.
Thanks for the update on the case. Good to know. It was a pleasure helping and best of luck. Enjoy.

If you are concerned about future issues, why not send the system back and have them inspect everything. No reason you should have to be concerned about this issue. Also, while they had it they could fix the cable routing to prevent the bending of the side panel. |

@Alex. Thanks. From what I've been told I have little to worry about and I've received further confirmation on this forum. I've had no issues with the system and send seem pretty detailed pics to the technician and he did not seem alarmed.
