6MB of RAM seems to be a popular choice of reviews i've read. But i was curious if 6 is overkill. Based on those that have played mid-high end games, does the extra 3MB of RAM make a difference? |

I think I read somewhere that it makes for faster app loading time, like IE, FF, word, notepad, but I could be thinking of something else..someone tell me if I'm wrong.

Go with 6 GB. Otherwise you'll be upgrading again in a year or two.

There are probably large numbers of people for whom 3Gb would be fine, most of those people would not pay extra for a custom PC. We tend to be folks who go a bit farther than necessary so we are ready in case something cool comes out that needs that little extra.

32 bit Windows can only utilize 4g of RAM, max. Upgrading to 6g of RAM only makes sense if you're getting a 64 bit OS. If you are, then go for it.

Actually, a 32 bit system only sees a max of 3.5 GIGS. The OP hasn't stated what he's running... 32 bit or 64 bit. If you're running a 64 bit, I personally would run 6 GIGS (2x3's). If you're running a 32 bit, then anything over 3 GIGS is a waste.of money.

When running 32 bit it only supports 4 GIGS total, so even though you have 4 GIGS of memory, only about 3.1 GIGS of it is being used because the CPU needs the other .9 GIGS of space for MMIO.

when you say "sees", people will take that as it "uses", most don't know the difference between seeing and using.
also a cpu can use upto .9GB, its not alway .9GB, I have pcs that use only .25GB for mmio. |
