well after a bunch of changes here is where I am at: config 737244
(see end of post for specs)

still wondering about sata hookups for drives (posted in hardware forum)
wondering If I should pay the $50 for DS to tweak my airflow and fans?
advantage to DS 5yr(3yr component) when most components are +3yr warranty?
is it worth overclocking on the 3820CPU since it is only partially unlocked?
opted for no sound card...mobo seemed good and worried about conflicts?

Will be adding the optional top 200mm fan to the haf X
dont need 32gb but it's cheap and who knows about tomorrow?
same with 1500W corsair, plus liked modular idea
decided to go ssd and use hotswap bay for future expansion
went with sli 670FTW, more than I need now but should keep me gaming :)
added the 4 USB3 card cause it's cheap and why not?

just curious, what is your screen(s) resolution?
Dont really need the FTW versions of cards, you can OC them easily yourself.

Seems like a solid build. As for the system, your wants/needs/preferences are kinda what makes the system tailor made for you.

As for the need to overclock the CPU, also an upto you thing. If mainly used for gaming, I don't think you are gonna see the performance boost that you might be expecting. I could be wrong, but never noticed a big difference when I overclocked previous systems.

As for your SATA questions, not sure what you are asking.

If the 50.00 is not an issue for you, then I would say yes to having them tweak them. Though if the 50.00 is an issue to you, it is not that hard to adjust the settings yourself with a little online research. I personally trust their judgments on their system builds.

Nothing out there gaming wise will utilize anywhere near 32gigs of RAM, but who knows what the future holds. I personally went 16 gigs on the last system I purchased with the option to go upto 32 in the future if I feel the need.

I could be wrong, but the Power Supply may even be considered overkill for 670's in SLI, but better to have more power than you need rather than not enough.

Hi caver,

It sounds like you have had more than one configuration thread. This makes it real hard to keep up with what has been suggested.

My thoughts:

1. You don't need Win-7 Ultimate unless you use foreign languages or other very specialized features of Ultimate. Win-7 Pro is all you need.

2. With the 3820 I would want the stage 1 OC just like you have.

3. 32 Gb of memory is way over kill but it is a pain to add more later with the D14 CPU cooler.

4. The 1200w PS is more than you need. For SLI the 1050 will do the job. The 1200AX is a good choice if you have the budget.

5. The 40Gb hard drive partition for recovery is not the best choice. If that drive fails then you lose your backup. It would work if you had it on both drives. Or, get the Windows Recovery Toolkit (Bundled with Windows 7 CD)

6. I would not have DS tweak your airflow and fans. The HAF-X has great airflow and you are adding the second 200mm fan to the top. These fans are low RPM to start with. Any reduction would just reduce the cooling. This option is primarily for systems with a bunch of 120mm fans that run at high RPMs. They tune them to reduce the noise.

Frank

Yea, I know there is some overkill there. Ram is cheap, and I really liked the modular option with the corsair 1500AX

I actually got the FTW cards for the better coolers than the reference 670.

Frank:
yes, I started a new thread since this system has evolved a bit, but good point about keeping the suggestions in 1 place.  Also probably right on win7 ultimate...I just hate getting a "lesser" OS.  I will probably take your advice and either ditch the partition or have it put on both drives.

OK. I upped the processor to the 3930k basically assuming that 6 cores will come in handy sometime down the road.

I dropped the USB 3.0 PCI card, Windows ultimate, and the advanced recovery kit.

I'm planning to talk to DS and order tomorrow. Would like to talk to someone knowledgeable about the SATA 3 controllers on the deluxe mobo.  Now, I'm sure "anybody" can help me, but having worked in retail and in call centers, any recommendations on a specific person who might help me "better"?  :)

*edit* config # 738014  hopefully my last :)

You really don't need the 6 core 3930k if I recall correctly you are just interested in gaming that being said the 3820 with the x79 quad channel ram will do you fine if you fancy a little rendering like with photoshop videos etc the 3930k is built for people that use there computers to do 3d modeling etc where the extra cores actually get used. If I was you I would use the money you save on a dedicated soundcard like the creative labs xfi titanium or just save the money and put it towards a monitor, headset, gaming mouse etc.

hmm well I have read where a dedicated sound card can interfere with performance of the GPU/s?

Also, after chatting with DS staff today, seems components ship with OEM drivers..but DS recommends you get latest manufacturer drivers. Not surprising.  However, thinking of having DS go ahead and download/install latest component drivers and motherboard BIOS. That way if there are issues they should catch in testing.  any thoughts?

I would assume they would not install it without testing it afterwards, so yes I think having DS install them is the right choice.

Well finally pulled the trigger.  ended up with config 738202

3930k cpu, 32gb RAM, ASUS X79 delux mobo, 1200w PSU, 2x240 ssd, 680 EVGA classified 4GB GPU, CPU stage 1 OC.  I also added a 200mm fan to the top of the HAFX for 2 top, 1 side, 1 rear fans total.

Overkill in just about every area, but hoping that means technology grows into my machine instead of trying to grow my machine into the technology.   I switched the 670FTW SLI cards for a single 680 Clasified figuring the 680 will do what I need and adding a 2nd card or a better one later will be easier than replacing the memory and processor under that jet engine D14. I also figure the KISS principle might apply given some comments about SLI being finicky.

I plan to open a DS Diary thread in the reviews section to chronicle the life of my new family member :)
