Hi I have been hanging around this website for some weeks now and after surfing the forums and trying builds I think I have found where I would feel best about spending my money to get an incredible system.
I have general pc knowledge but not the most in depth, I will use my PC for gaming both MMOS and FPS and graphics work (photoshop etc) I want performance and would like to have my PC last me far longer than the disasters I've had with bigname vendors **cough DELL. I also need the PC to look fantastic. For the money spent Id like to show it off of course. Blue lights with white tubing would be my dream. (purple highlights in perfect world)
I will be buying a monitor as well. I need 1920-1200 res and 24" any suggestions? $300-400 range (This can be outside the 4000 budget)
Heres what I came up with. Whats useless and whats not? Do I need the soundblaster card if I dont use a fancy sound system? Do they all come with controls on outside for temp/fans? etc And what exactly does this case look like WITH the side panel on it...all the pics show it open only?
4308.00 I blew the budget:(

EVGA x3 SLI board doesn't really offer you anything the EVGA LE doesn't. Indilinx SSDs (like the one you have selected) suck, go with a 80GB or 160GB Intel SSD. How badly do you need/want the Blu-Ray player? Drop it if it isn't needed. How badly do you need/want a sound card? Drop it if it isn't needed. A single GTX 480 will max all but 2-3 games at 1920x1200 resolution, drop the second one. Upgraded case fans are very loud, that will be up to you if you can live with it, they do look very nice. Drop the surge protector, buy your own somewhere else for cheaper.

They're locked at x16/x8/x8/x4, so x16/x8 for dual SLI/CrossFire and x16/x8/x8 for triple. But since the GTX 480 and ATI 5970 are the only two GPUs that can even start to saturate x8 bandwidth, he'll be fine. A 480 losses an average of 2% performance when limited to a x8 lane, a 5970 can lose more but 5970 suck and you shouldn't be running them in CrossFire to start with. |

So isn't still he losing 2% sli performance by default for choosing the LE. Much better to choose a different mobo than to chose one which is automatically nerfed to begin with.

Other boards are "nerfed" in other ways, it is a balancing act.

Actually, I'd like to have that one myself, but it's a little out of my range, too.
Here's one you might go for at ~$400.
I don't have this, but it's at the top of my list.

True...True, well Gpaint does claim to have a 4000USD budget so I suppose an extra 44 bucks to upgrade to an evga sli won't mean that much to him, especially since he's already dropping huge wads of money on sli'ed gtx 480s to begin with, he might as well get the most out of his monster gpus. BTW you know whats a great board: the asus p6x58d-e. Has a great rep, oc's brilliantly and has usb 3 and sata 3 support, and its great value for the money. This one is the board I'll be getting for my summer build. Edited by sirsiddius - 08 May 2010 at 6:27pm |

Thanks for the replies so far:) @dragoonseal I appreciate you showing me how and where I can lower the costs. I have trouble visualizing what Im getting when I make my configs so I tend to assume the available upgrades are practically needed to have it be a halfway decent machine.
Its a bit out of my understanding what your discussing with the motherboards but, I would just get the motherboard that wouldn't cause any performance loss. I would never be in the territory of using more than a dual GPU setup however. So here are some further questions to help me understand for making choices. I see many configs using the i7920+ overclock...the price diff between the 930+overclock is small...is there a reason to go with one vs the other? If im using headphones and a simpler speaker setup is the money spent on a sound card worth it? And is it a simple process to add later on? The area I'm having the most trouble on is the cooling options, it is easy to select options and jump that price way up. I want to be safe with my temps but I dont want a very loud machine either. If I dont have a fancy sub zero I would still have the case lit up in a color of my choice right? Oh and the front panel temp controls...how nice is this to have? Very useful or more a novelty? So basically I like what dragoon did but cutting out the unneeded ( one GPU is good for now I agree) Just trying to learn a little more about what my machine will look like/sound like with the less expensive options. And I will be using the DELL ultra sharp 24 ty again |

stick with 920, as pointed out the LE will give you what you need, even in dual gpu, you lose like 4 fps, which in dual gpu environment will not be noticed.
I'm not a sound expert but all sound experts say that if you use headphones, best to go with a sound card. 90% of your sound comes from gpu's fans when gpu is under load, so to LC the cpu does not save you any sound, the gpu needs to be LCed and if you want quiet then you want a particular rad and fans on them to have a quiet LC system. for cooling on cpu go with Noctua, as I said the upgraded fans are loud, and the fan controller does not control all your fans and its temps are not accurate, thus its pointless. go with the second build dragoonseal made, just keep in mind to make sure that 80GB is enough room for what you are doing, and drop the upgraded fans. |

Ive been doing alot of research on video cards and I just cant seem to find two sites that agree but overall I seem to find more evidense that the ati 5970 is the better choice over the 480? Seems in part due to it having had more time to be updated. I know the 5970 is essentially 2 GPUS with 1gb ram. I will be a gamer on the pc i purchase from here but i will do alot of graphical work, which is better from a gaming + proffesional perspective? Eveyone here seems to always tell it how it is.... and I was hoping to see the insight you all have in the 5970 vs 480 discussion

the 5970 is faster than the GTX 480. on average.. I can show you games where the 5970 beats the 480 badly, and others where the 480 will win, by a bit.. change the in game settings and everything changes again..
but for overall gaming experience I would get the GTX 480, and get a powerful enough power supply, so that you can run two of them down the road.
or get 2 5870's... the 5970 has had a lot of driver issues, not letting it perform as well as it should.
take the reviews with a grain of salt, most reviewers have no idea what they are doing. I was just looking at a recent review of 3 5870's overclocked running resident evil 5, 1920 x 1200 res, max settings... he got a lower score than I got with my 2 4890's.. and 1/2 of what my 5870's get..

Thanks for the fast Reply:0 Should I be concerned about the apparent noise/heat/power draw of the 480 or can that all be optimized through driver updates as times goes by? Would a LC option help lower the noise by much?

another vote for 2 x 480/5870 instead of 4970.
noise is gonna be an issue with any gpu under load. LC will eliminate this issue, and it will take care of heat issue also, however lately I have seen many people with sli 480 on air and they say that their temps are much lower then what was reported by the reviews, your room temp will play big part in all that also. I would go with one 4805870 and as justin said, get a big enough psu, so that if I need to add another down the road, my psu can handle it, for cf 5870 a corsair 1000w will do and for sli 480 the 1250 enermax is great also. |
