So I'd like to tweak the default fan speeds of my GTX 480. I know I can use Afterburner (which I am currently doing), but is there any way to change the default fan speed at a given temperature on the card itself so I won't have to have Afterburner running?

yes, just mod the fan profile on the GPU BIOS

 why wouldn't you just use Afterburner, and have it start up with Windows? It just seems the simplest way of doing it.

yea afterburner is pretty simple, and will be a good thing to use for fine adjustments even if you want to set it in the bios after you are sure of your decision
