Is there really any point in overclocking to 5.0 Ghz? My intent is high-end gaming, and nothing else.
And even if I did OC, would it be absolutely necessary to have stage 6 liquid cooling? I'm assuming with 5.0 Ghz, stage 2 Noctua cooling would not be enough. And if I chose to OC to only about 3.8 Ghz, what kind of cooling system would be necessary to ensure my CPU won't blow up? xD |

at 5ghz you will need a GOOD Liquid cooling setup.....if you only do 3.8ghz then the noctua air cooler will do just fine.....
and about the OC question in regards to game performance........studies show that anything past I think it's 3.4 ghz doesn't give any noticeable advantage in games......Games rely more on the GPU than the CPU... |

depending on what your refering to(either 1366 or 1155) getting 4+ ghz on air for 1155 is simple. If your talking about 1366 on air your probaly only gonna get mid to high 3 ghz.

For gaming 5.0 is not needed, all you need is around 3.9GHz.

There is no one answer. It depends on the game, settings, resolution, GPU solution, and goals.
some games get by great with 2.4Ghz quad core, others will scale well way past 5.0ghz.
The best approach, IMHO is to try to remove all the bottlenecks as you can.
So a 5.0Ghz Sandy Bridge CPU, with fast RAM, and a good SSD should put 95% of the bottleneck on the GPU(s). The first thing that goes obsolete is the GPU(s), so when you upgrade your GPU(s) down the road, the rest of the PC will still be good to go for a while, kinda like buying time.
On the other side of the coin, a 4.0Ghz Sandy bridge will do 80% of that 5.0Ghz monster, and will not be a bottleneck for most apps/games, but for those few times.. lol
I run my Sandy Bridge at 5.4Ghz, and would not have it any other way.

well I am going to give the 1366 platform one more chance, so I will see if I can get my dream 5.0Ghz 24/7 PC out of it. SB is great, but not enough tweaking ability to make me happy.
DST's new build will be named the "BIEBERSNOOKI"
I guess you could call Snooki a drunken monkey, oh man that is terrible, going to have to re-name him.

I don't even have to do anymore talking, you are getting yourself for me
Also I would never dream taking the name of your pc and using it for my next build LOL its either you can't get there, or when you get there is not satisfactory, oc-wise. Edited by DST4ME - 23 Feb 2011 at 3:13pm |
