Howdy,
About to purchase and need some much needed advice.
Plan to play at 1080p, never going to go to a higher resolution, or add multiple monitors BUT I love and need all the eye candy like AA, VSYNC, Tripple Buffering, high resolution textures, shadows, spell animations, etc.
So, I don't want to waste money but I also don't mind spending it *IF* I will get something for it. Will the 3GB help me with more eye candy like mentioned? Do current and near future games need more than 1.5GB @1080p WITH all eye candy turned up?
Please support your argument with personal experience, references, or logic! Thanks so much for your help!
Justin

Well I own a 1.5g 580 and it is a beast of a card, I play at 1080 as well. There are now a few games that max out the Vram. May want to think about sli 570's, the 2,5 gig version.

Which games? And, I only want to run 1 card ever. Doesn't that make the 580 3GB a good choice if what your saying is true?

jgortner,
ive heard several times on these forums that 580(s) are a waste at 1080p, and only needed at higher res, let alone the 3gb versions. i personaly have 2 570's (1.25gb) in sli and can blow through any game i have (BF3 is REALLY pretty on ultra ) ive played with only one 570 some times too (doing mods/maintenance on the other) and i barely noticed a difference in most games (only really graphicaly intense ones, ie crysis on max when things are being blown up all around did the fps noticably drop).
thats my two cents on it, but see what the others say. :) |

BF3, Aliens Vs. Predator come to mind. I love my 580 it really eats anything I throw at it. I'm no expert but I think the 3gb version will be awesome for what you are looking for. I mean I can only go by what I have used personally.

jgortner,
are you saying that you dont want SLI or that you dont want to upgrade gpus? and im pretty sure you only need/ use that much vram at higher resolutions than 1080p. |

I'm saying that I will never run more than 1 GPU at a time. I don't mind upgrading down the road but only ever to a single GPU solution.
I just wanted to have people understand that the heart of the question is only 1 580 1.5GB or 1 580 3.0GB for someone that like to turn everything up.

If you want to save a few bucks as well, not a ton of difference between the 570 and 580. If your worried about vram there is a 2.5gb 570.

I don't like the hassles that come along with a dual GPU setup. My goal is to build a very stable and long lasting rig with as few problems as possible.
I did think about the 570 2.5GB as well. Not sure how much performance I'd loose.

but with a single 570/580, you are not going to be able to play at highest settings, games like bf3 need sli to play with all the bells and whistles.
single or sli go with 570, if you want high aa settings go with 2.5GB if you like since the difference is only $30. |

in my experience there is very very little hassle involved with sli, pretty much just make sure the bridge is plugged in and that the setting is enabled in the nvidia control panel...

I have to say sli has some bugs with some games, but for the most part its hassle free as SGW stated, so in short there are no real hassles.

If some games don't work with SLI isn't that the fault of the game not the SLI configuration? With out SLI game play will probably be limited as new games come to market.
jgortner, you should rethink your position about getting SLI GPUs. They give you the best performance and I just don't see anyone complaining on this forum about SLI problems. They have GPU problems but no problems with SLI its self. Frank Edited by FrankW - 30 Oct 2011 at 1:06pm |
