Trying to build a budget pc for a friend whose budget is right at $1500.  I have picked the Intel i7 875k processor, and now the question is do I go with a gtx 465 for less money and more along his budget or do I go with the 5850.  Or am I working in the wrong area and should I bump the processor down a bit and go with a beefier gpu?

Now this seems it belongs more in the config section since I'm bringin in other parts than the 5850 vs. gtx 465.  However, if I'm gonna go with the 465 I could upgrade to an x58 build with a 930 cpu minus the noctua cooler, would this be the best route for performance?  Or, if I'm sticking with the p55 build, I could down the cpu to the i5 655k, and stick a gtx 480 in there.  Lol so many ways to go, this budget is a hard one to build for.. Ahh I'm stumped.

I would drop the CPU to a 870, and get a GTX 470, or ATI 5850, preferably the GTX 470

Okay, I will see if he could afford going around 60 dollars over.  If not a 5850 would be fine.  But what do you think about dropping to the i5 655k and sticking a gtx 480 in right at the budget price?  Or would the 870 overall be a much better choice?

655+GTX 480, no.
870, unless you can get a 860 cheaper, with GTX 470, would be my choice. overall a alot more powerful.

eh, honestly, I'm waiting a little bit on video cards. the GTS 450, which is even more mainstream oriented than the GTX 460, seems to be due out soon, and rumors of a fully unlocked GF104 core (GTX 460 GPU, it has a few things holding its graphics core back at the moment) might come out as a more powerful GTX 475 once GTX 470 supplies are exhausted.

the 104 architecture is vastly inferior to 100.. the 104 does well on DX 9, and low settings.. hence why it is targeted at those buyers.

Well he upped his budget, and I was able to get him on the x58 board, with the 930, 6g ds certified 1600 mhz ram, wd 500 gb hdd, gtx 480, and with the stage 1 noctua cooler.  Now, here's a question though with the monitor he's goin with and mouse and stuff this put's the price around $1,977 with the haf 922, but if he downgraded to the cooler master elite 430 this would put in a bit more comfortable price.  Would the haf 922 be such a better choice that it warrants upping his budget. I know its not much of a difference in price, but its pushing his budget boundaries as is.  I haven't had much experience with the Cooler Master Elite 430, nor have I read much on it so I wouldn't know how significant the gains in cooling would be.

I would drop the GPU to a GTX 470, and get the better of the 2 cases. lol  with a medium overclock the GTX 470 will match or beat the 480.

Okay, lol.  Well I think he can afford the better case and the 480, but you think he should just go with the 470 overall?  He doesn't have overclocking experience lol, but I could tell him just go with the 470 then post for help on the forums.

Also, what is your take on the Maelstrom case. I don't know much about that one either, I know its the deafult case for that build in the special deals configs, but I'm leaning more towards the haf 922

I have never used that case, so no real input on it, hate to give advice on components that I have not used.
For his monitor size, I would just get the GTX 470. The 480 isa bit more powerful, but for the extra money, I would much rather have a 470.

Alright thanks, he will probably be goin with a 470, cause then he could throw in a 40 gig ssd and still be under the haf + 480 combo's price.  So oc'ing the 470 on air with a medium overclock won't be loud or too hot?  Also, I would think that at a monitor res of 1680x1050, because I think that's what the res will be with the 22" acer monitor. The 480 would be overkill, but he was wanting to be able to at least play games on high settings for a couple of years, because he isn't much of the type to keep up with the latest gear in pc's.

104 is inferior to 100, but then again it also eat up nearly as much power or give off as much heat as the 100 models, which I'm guessing may have been how 104 spawned in the first place. But anyways, yeah, 470 seems good at the moment. Judging from the 470's specs versus the 480, I don't think the 480's price justifies it. Just overclock the 470 to 480 speed, lol.

For the Inwin Maelstorm and Ironclad, here's what I've read about their features...
- Dual 120/140mm fans mountable on top
- Dual 80mm (i think) expansion slot fans (they fold down when you open the side panel)
- Liquid Cooling passthroughs on the back
- Exterior design is unique, discrete but flashy front

Yeah, it doesn't sound like a bad case I haven't read any reviews, but I'm thinking he might go with the Maelstrom.

No problem.  Posted a link to the iron clad review (not as a polished review) in that post too.

I like HAF's or Raven's (that includes the FT02) for aircooling, IMO. HAF's because of the sheer amount of air the thing can shove, and Raven's because of the AP181 fan upgrades that are possible (swapping the built in fans for AP181s should allow for the case to literally blast air right through the top hatch. no firsthand account yet, but it should prove promising)

Yeah I know the HAF's and Raven's are great air cooling cases, but I haven't seen any in depth reviews comparing the maelstrom with the hafs, or had experience with them personally.  I feel like it'd be more on the safe side to reccomend the haf 922 over the maelstrom, but then again I trust that DS wouldn't offer a bad case as the main option for this build.
