Hi, I'm new to this forum and I'm planning to purchase a new computer through DS in November. I've been looking into different video cards set up and their benchmarks through various websites and I need some help in choosing the best set up. I have been considering getting 470SLI for a while but I understand that it has a very high power consumption and temperature (http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/30999-nvidia-geforce-gtx-470-sli-review-17.html). Not to mention they barely outperform 5850xfire on many games. I've also considered getting one 480 and SLI it later down the road. I do realize that I'm going to need a 1250w PSU but is the temperature of the GPU's going to be tolerable without additional GPU cooling? I currently have a 32 inch LCD HDTV that I plan on using as a monitor but I'm unsure of its maximum resolution. So should I get:
a) 470 SLI b) 5850 Crossfire c) 480 and get a second card later Thank you for any help in advance. |

Simple answer: Whenever possible, stick to one GPU if you can. There are bugs still with CF/SLI.
To answer your question about the GTX 480 + heat. If you get a well cooled case like the HAF 932 you shouldn't have any problems running that card in SLI. The case has plenty of air flow to keep everything inside cool.
The original reviews about how hot the 480 was were wrong. It gets warm, but Nvidia designed the chipset to work within those heat ranges. And no, it will not boil an egg =)

save yourself the hassle and the money, get 1 470 or 1 480, buy a 750w psu.
use the money left over to get a sick monitor to enjoy your card
or pocket it, and buy the new hot card in 2 years
"adding sli later" is pretty much putting new rims on an old car. it will look a little better, wont change the fact that its outdated. Edited by !ender_ - 14 Jul 2010 at 8:51am |

The 'max' resolution of TV's will always be 1920*1080 (correct me if im wrong) I have the Samsung HL61A750 and when I plugged the rig into it to try out the 3D Vision the highest rez avail was 1920*1080...
Like the above post(s) mentioned Single GPU would be more practical and cost effective unless you're running higher resolutions (higher than 1900x1200). But then again putting new rims on a car makes it look more sexy, and makes you want to drive it more... it depends on the rims though... Edited by Patrick_DS - 14 Jul 2010 at 9:36am |

Thank you for the quick response, guys. It seems that everyone likes single GPU vs multiple. If that's the case, then is 480 is best single GPU to have right now? Should I just spend $190 more for the 5970 which beats 480 in FPS by a good bit at almost every game on the Hexus.net (http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=24061&page=5) benchmark. What do you guys think? Is it worth it?
P.S. I just checked out the Hexus review of 5850 crossfire compared to single 480 amongst a couple other cards and the 5850 crossfire did much better than the single 480 in most cases. But it costs $128 more on DS. (http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=24061&page=14) Also, what is the difference between a computer LCD monitor and the 32" LCD HDTV that I currently have? Is there a huge difference in the quality between the two? Edited by checkoutchek - 14 Jul 2010 at 1:00pm |

that goes to preference
im an nvidia fan, so i would stick with the 480
the nvidia bandwagon claims that as dx11 and tesselation break into the market, they will pull ahead of ati
but thats a gamble

wouldnt really call a total of 6 games that can use dx 11, almost all in the last 6 months, being around for a year
and the only trace ive seen of the tesselation which is supposively such a big deal is in the heaven bench test

1/2 of the current ones did come out last year.
And Tessellation can be seen now in current Dx11 games.

1/2 of the current 6 makes... 3... in the past year
wouldnt really call that mainstream, theres usually more than 6 games on an average gpu benchmark test
if anything, were on the very first 1/2 step of dx11/tessellation

ok well i change my wording to becoming mainstream!!!!!
i agree, i actually havent played any dx11 games yet, im excited to try but i still havent even reformatted to "start" using my computer
all i have is SC2 and crysis right now but i just cant stop playing sc2 long enough to reformat and install my other games!!
im really worried about the future of computer games, ported console games and mmos seem to be what we get to look fw to.
yay. Edited by !ender_ - 14 Jul 2010 at 9:23pm |

i wanted to get metro, but there seem to be an overwhelming amount of bad reviews. usually i could care less what reviews say, but i couldnt even find a good one, pretty discouraging
can you please try adding 1, 2, or 3 spaces after your sig to get rid of those godforsaken scrool bars!

480 for power. I just wanted to bring up one thing though, if you think about dual 5870s in XFire, I say screw it, go the whole hog with a 5970. I'm thinking it might actually be possibly that an Asus ARES 5970 will nicely kill the hell out of any GTX 480 SLI rig...Hey, the stock clocks are 850Mhz Engine and 4800Mhz Mem.....lol...

Uhm. Maybe we read different articles. The Asus Ares isn't a 5970.
It's a 5870x2.

Dual 470's would be a good route, value wise.
If you overclocked them.. they would perfrom as well as 2 stock GTX 480's, unless you are running 2560x1600 res, then the GTX 480's could pull ahead on a couple games that use a ton of memory from the GPU's..
The only downside of overclocking them is the noise.. my GTX 470 is a great gaming card, and with a 50% overclock, has incredible performance for the $$, but it is very loud when pushed that hard..
dual 5850 is a good setup, you can overclock them a bit, to nearly get the same performance as 2 5870's stock, but on most games, with max settings the Nvidia cards will be faster, only with no AA do the ATI cards match or beat the Nvidia cards on most games. Turn up the AA and the ATI cards fall well behind.

Yep, same applies to even the ARES. Dual 5870 GPUs or not, it still lagged behind SLI'd 480s when heavier AA was applied.
