The 6870 is cheaper on the configurator. Why is this? I don't know what statistics of graphics cards apply to gaming the most.

ATI named their mid range card 6870.... very confusing to people. the 6870 has new tech, and a great card for the $$, but as of right now the 5870 is slightly faster, there will be a 6970 very soon that will be their top single card.

the good news about this card is it is going to force nvidia to reduce prices on their 4xx line to combat this new release.
for the extra money 5870 would be better, and it performs better as well. however the 6870 has less of a performance gap between max and min fps. is it worth losing overall top performance? not really since the difference is only minor 2-4 fps on both ends. looks like both gpu manufacturers didn't really get what they wanted out of this years releases. each had higher expectations but nvidia is still king. i wonder how bulldozer is going to do... they may steal intels crown for the first time since the athalon. |

No........ Seriously..?? Dude, the 6870 performs great. The crossfire scaling is really improved, and it can almost hold it's own with a 480 when it comes to cf performance, I mean it is not too far off. It is more of the performance of a 470 though. Yet this card was only set to replace the 5770, which the 5850 is the true competitor to the 470. So this card is performing awesomely. Also, bot companies thought they would be designing cards on a 32nm structure however TSMC screwed that up. However, I honestly do not see how you can see Nvidia is still the King. Ati beat them to Dx11, got the sales, Nvidia came in with controversy with heat and power issues. The performance didn't wow people on how much it actually beat the 5870. And, now ATI releases this mid range card that can almost compete with the best, and the 5970 is going to rip the 480. Which, this card is speculated to drop in November or so. Also, Nvidia's counter the 580, will probably end up losing out to the ATI dual card coming out a little later in the December range Antilles. I do like ATI, or my bad AMD but I am in no way a fanboy. I will admit the 480 is the best single card on the market right now, yet you at least have to give credit when credit is due. AMD took the upper hand with their early 2009 Dx11 release, and they are still doing a good job and maintaining the Dx11 market in the performance region. If Nvidia could be labeled king anywhere in this particular market it would be the 460/5330-5700 area of performance. Which the Bart cards 6850 and 6870 are created to compete with, and they do that justly so, even measuring up to the 470.

So in response to the OP, if you are ordering in December around Christmas, AMD's new 6970 should be out, and if the performance of it matches that of the 6870's in respect to their areas of competition then I would truly choose those cards. However, the true cards anyone should be waiting for were rumored to drop in the spring 2011 area, and that is the true new architecture by AMD called Northern Islands, which will include a die shrink down to 28nm. So if you have patience, I would wait it out till then, because these will be the true performance monsters. Then again, by then your cards will still be newish so you could just sell them and make a true upgrade that will last,
. Being that we won't be seeing much more die shrinks anymore once we get down in the teens, we will have to improve efficiency with what we got till we can usher in a new tech to replace the silicon era.

lol starting brand flamewars is one of the best marketing tricks ever
makes me wonder if people who argue so strongly for thier favorite brand know that they are being used as marketing tools by the brand they stand so strongly behind

Lolz at dragoon, and yes I am paid by AMD !ender. But no seriously I usually don't like to get into this stuff till lately, I just don't understand on what basis you could say NVIDIA is the king right now based on love for the company and misinformation when you're giving someone advice on upgrades. So yes I got into a bit of a rant.

And to clarify something flaming is based more off of halftruths and and misguiding info. No sir, if NVIDIA were to switch positions with AMD and they hit the Dx11 market first and were maintaining the upper hand in the performance region, I would've gone off on the same rant about them. I just don't like to see the truth being bent especially when people are spending money over it, call me a protector of truth if you will lol.

i never said nvidia is king of anything
dont misquote me, and dont pull me into a flame war. i reccomend nvidia for two reasons:
1 as dragoon and i have said, its by a long shot the most common issue we see in the tech forums
2 i know nvidia better, and i reccomend what i know will work in every category
ive never told anyone not to get ATI (except dual gpu cards), i just state my opinion, which I in no way, ever, try and justify by brand bashing or pretending like i know anything that i do not Edited by !ender_ - 29 Oct 2010 at 10:57pm |

!ender did I say you said Nvidia was king? If you look earlier in the forum somebody else clearly stated that. I wasn't dragging you into a flame war. Rather, you came into the discussion ridiculing fanboys and acting as if I was one. Thus, I made the clarification.

Ward, you will never be as big of a fanboy as Bender.
The pros and cons were laid out earlier in this post and the rest is just friendly banter.
On a side note the 6970 is looking to be a really good card, seen some die shots yesterday.
