Why is there no more option for the 680 A1 board on the config page anymore?

If you believe EVGA's web site, you can't get them at the moment ("backordered"). Also, aren't they kind of obsolete? Of course, this is a drag since that's what's in my seven month old machine. Sigh....

I'd get a 780i today. As I understand it, the old 680i won't support the new 45 nm Quad chips. The old LT board was okay, but not as overclocking friendly as the A1. The A1 had better cooling and two Ethernet ports....
Somebody like skyR would be more knowledgeable. Edited by Bill the Cat - 08 Apr 2008 at 11:57pm |

Bill has the right of it.
The LT doesn't have quite as robust a cooling option on the SPP and the BIOS is not as overclocking friendly either. There are 2 fewer rear USB ports, no POST LED, and no motherboard POST speaker. The maximum officially supported memory speed for the LT board is 800MHz as listed on the EVGA product guide. This is another difference from the 680i A1 specifications. The 780i motherboard replaced the 680i. I agree with Bill. If you want a good overclocking board, and can swing the price difference, I would go with the 780i. |

The 680 supports 1066MHz, 1110 MHz, and 1200MHz ram
The 680 supports 1600FSB (qdr)
The 680 Supports the 45nm chips.
I know because I successfully ran mine at these settings at various times.
But now I have a 780i. I have it at 1900FSB qdr. :)

Kelly, was that a dual or a quad core 45 nm CPU? I knew it was supposed to run the duals. If the quads work, that's interesting news.

That's news to me.
EVGA had previously stated that the onboard MOSFETS could not handle the Yorkfield processors, despite earlier promises that support for the quads would require only a BIOS update, and despite the fact that engineering samples of Yorkfield had been successfully run on a 680i prior to Intel's official release. Eventually, the uproar that followed prompted EVGA to expand their GPU upgrade program to motherboards during a limited window where 680i users could trade in their motherboards towards the purchase of a 780i. Wolfdale support with P32 I knew about, QX9650 support is a completely new one on me. |

It's all a matter of marketing... they want you to buy the new board...

Or they don't want to deal with the failure rates in the field.... I'd really like the option of upgrading to a 45 nm quad at some point. I didn't think I could. Now, I'll just have to wait long enought so that I won't flip out if the upgrade smokes the 680i
