Cant decide on video card. Going with the q6600 proc, and 2gig of ram. the 8600 is about $200.00 cheaper than the 8800. I wonder if the 8600 would hold me over for a year or two and also play all the great stuff coming out this year and next...? thoughts?

The 8600 will not be able to handle games such as Crysis or UT3 at a reasonable framerate. You will be lucky to even get a max of 30 FPS at 800x600 / lowest settings.
If you don't plan on upgrading for another year or two. I would suggest the 7950 or 8800 GTS 320. |

I don't know, my 8500 is able to handle the UT3 demo (or beta, not sure) just fine at full settings. I've also seen a 7900GT run the UT3 demo (again, or beta) at full settings, though it did suffer some frame rate loss at times. Of course I'm certain Crysis would require more to run at maximum settings. Still, I'm sure you could get away with moderate settings using the 8600. So it might hold up for a year, but not at max settings. I'd say go with the 8800. You'll be happier in the long run.

I faced this decision in putting together my build. I hit my pain point on the price and had to decide where I was going to trim to make budget. The GPU lost. To my way of thinking, this is a component that is very likely to be replaced 2 if not 3 times during the lifecycle of a computer. I looked over my build, decided that the components that I expected to use for longer than 2 years were more important. Basically, I projected how well I would feel I had spent my money a year from now. The 8600GT for me, seemed the best course. I don't see much performance gain to be had going to the GTS for that extra $90, but others may disagree.
If, on the other hand, you have some room left in your budget, I would suggest the 8800GTS 640MB. It has the VRAM you will want to tackle the new DX10 titles, and plenty of power to deliver decent frame rates at high settings. I think you would be better served in looking to this card if you want a longer lifespan from your GPU than stopping at the 320MB version.

Make the 200 dollar investment now with an 8800 or be prepared to buy another video card soon...
The 8600 isnt a bad card per-se... but longevity is hard to come by in hardware. Games are going through a "growth spurt" right now and the lower end cards just wont push the graphics for long. I am running a 7900gtx... its only a year old and the new games really push this thing hard now to the point where I have to scale back the graphics some. Some folks might be ok with that but to me ... that a signal to upgrade. You will be starting off at the lower end of the middle spectrum if you went with the 8600 and may get discouraged very quickly. Edited by ed1371 - 17 Oct 2007 at 12:08am |

I think that you won't be able to go 2 years with the 8600, I tried to live with my aging system for a lot longer than I should have, I ended up playing console games for over two years. But if you are absolutely stuck, go with the card you can afford and have fun with what you can play well!
You can always create a gpu find and search for the best price and card for the next 6 months or so and then you will be able to replace it. However, DS what is your warranty about using parts from elsewhere? Does that void it? So, we can only upgrade with your parts? |

If you get the part from someone else it won't be covered in your warranty from us. However, all of the other parts you received from us are still covered.
