8800's vs. 285

I've been having issues with 2 8800's in sli basically since I got my system (october 07).  Ive recently upgraded to the 780i. mobo
 
DS is willing to replace my 88's 'cause they are still under warranty....
 
but im thinking of upgrading to a single 285 or 295, but it'll cost me...
 
anyone have an opinion on the direction I should go here?
 
ps. I have a core 2 quad qx6850 extreme 3 oc'd at 3.33Ghz and 4 G of ram
    (would a 285/95 be overkill?)

I would stick with 8800s and then upgrade next year to the new line of gpus if I were you

those ultras are pretty kickass cards they should give you over 60 fps in games which is all you need.

the new cards for lack of name, we are calling them 300 gt line, they are suppose to be much better then current gtx line, other then that, I got nothing else to tell you nobody has any other details yet.

various sites mentioned various times they might be released.

u can go 2 nivida's website and every game that uses sli will be listed. as far as the 300 card go at the moemnt i think u might as well go with a 295 or 275 which ever one u decide. a 300 card wont boost your performance to a point where its neede a 295 is more than the majority need so most wont need a 300. theire gonna use more power and create more heat. not to mention cost more. at this point IMO theres really no sense in getting a 300 card maybe in 3 years when gmaes only use sli and physx really begins to be used and thats if that happens that fast

Harleyman, normally I'm with you, but this statement seems way off. I use a GTX 250, which is supposed to be a 9800 GTX+, which is supposed to be just a tad faster than an 8800 GTX ULTRA. The 250 is satisfactory for me, but only because I use low (1280x1024) resolutions. I can't imagine playing at 1920x1200 on a single card.

well, i was just playing crysis-warhead with sli off (so, on one 8800U)
all settings on 'gamer' 4xAA @ 1920x1200, and it ran pretty damn fast...
 
maybe a lil' choppy on the cutscenes (which are pretty long)

i believe 1920x1200 will run on a single 275 or 295 i think. but back to business i think that if u wanna upgrade either go 2 x 275 or 1x 295 id go with 2x 275 but i think 1 295 would be a little more future proof down the road. still dont theink its worth the xtra what like 250

inferno did you point out to the op that everything you said about the 300 gt was your assumptions and not facts, we have no idea what power usage, heat or anything like that will be.

all we know is that its going to be a more powerful car then the 295 and 285,which will offer better performance.

we don't know any details about the card, even Nvidia's employees don't know any details,.

what if its a card with better temps, lower power usage and much much better performance?

the only reason you think 295 will do better is cause you are assuming better drivers will give it better performance, the card has been out for 6 month and all the driver upgrades have not given it any better performance over 2 x 285 or 2 x 275. there is no reason to thing future will be the same.


right now 2 x 275 trumps 1 x 295 and there is no reason to think things will change, and 2 x 275 costs less, so you are 100% right about going with 275.

yes a single 275 will run 1900 x 1200 but will not give smooth game play in all games. to be sure you get 60 fps on all games 2 x 275 is needed.

@MajorWyrenutz crysis is more of a CPU bound game then GPU, and the fact that it did so well is a testimony to how great the 8800 ultras are.

no im saying that cuz 295 is 2 cards vs just 1 so its already in sli and is the only card that can quad sli ( i know i only sugested one  that was cuz of the expensise and the user said he only wanted one) i know 2x 275's is better than 1 295 and you get anothe pci slot to use so to me its a little more future proof.
 
2 bad we cant say that for the 295 red edition by the way has any1 actually ordered one of those???

red edition has the same specs as the regular one from what I understand. tho 295 is one card, rules of sli still apply to it, maybe the op didn't know that.

for his use 2 x 8800 ultra is doing just fine, he will spend more money and not see any difference, but who knows what the 300gt looks like, it might be worth the money to him then, as far as game play I think for him to change cards would be pointless, no matter 2 x 8800 ultra or 1 x 285 or 1 x 295, he is over 60fps in most games so he won't notice the difference, well actualy the 285 won't give 60fps in all games so take that one out.

its gonna cost him nothing to replace the 8800s, so why change now? the future is 300gt, so lets wait and see what it is.

the 300 grand prix never been u offering up tickets for free lets go.
 
nah once again im just kidding. i just dont see what perforamnce gains hes gonna get if everything he does is more than good, and i know the red editions the smae thing i think i posted a thread bout it and u gave me the same answer

the latest racing game i played was Need for speed not carbon but the one right after underground. racings not my cup o tea im more of a 1st peron shooter, strategy and fighting person. my fav game online though was Jedi Acadmey for the PC i never got to try KoToR 2 wouldnt run on my labtop it was so laggy you had to hold the keys down to get em 2 move.

I played Jedi Acadmey for a while that was fun.

carbon was the best one so far IMO. nothing like those police chases

i liked playing the conquest i think it was the 1  where u had the objectives to complete to win when u got 16 + ppl it was fun dets are fun a annyoing at the same time
 
yeah except in the one after underground where u piss every off and go to lvl 5 pursuit those police porsches were nothing nice. i remeber drivinging around the stadium time after time it was the only way 2 earn points and u needed them to keep going nothing will piss u off more till u hit a spike strip or something and they catch you and you gotta start from lvl 1 all over again
 
amd while im still thinking about the sega  i had some awsome games like joe montana football it was the only 1 where u could continually put ppl on the strecher
