I originally bought an 8800 GTS with the idea of adding a second board at some point. It now looks like the GTS won't be around all that much longer. If I'm going to go SLI, I've got to decide pretty soon, or the choice will be made for me. Given that I play games at relatively low resolutions (1280x1024), will I be better off adding a second GTS or replacing the GTS with an 8800 GT? I've done some research. Obviously, the GT is significantly faster than a single GTS in most cases, but what about compared to two?
The first GTS is a sunk cost, so the real question is.... Are two GTSs for a total of $220 a better choice than one GT for $280?

IMHO, I would say no, for the reason you give. " I play games at relatively low resolutions (1280x1024)". Waste of money on SLI.
The GTS might not be a total loss if you can find another buyer and price it right.

He is referring to the G80 version of the 8800GTS not the G92 GPU.
NVidia really should have taken the 45 seconds to come up with some more alphabet soup to throw at their new cards to differentiate between generations of chips. =/ My two bits: Normally, I would say don't worry what tomorrow brings, but in this particular case, I would probably hold off for the next gen of GPU's to come out. The 8800GTS (G80) is still an ok performer, and I think if you're going to upgrade from your current card, getting a true move up in generation, rather than a simple die shrink, is the way to go. |
