ok so i'm building a computer on DS and i'm torn between a 8800GT 512MB and the 9600GT 512MB. i'm not to good with Hardware so i'm curious which one will give me more performance?
when i see 8800 VS 9600 i think 8800=less but it's more expensive so which one is better for my computer? btw i'm getting the Nvidia 780i mobo.
Thanks! |

9600GT vs 8800GT Pros:
> Runs cooler than the 8800GT so it requires less case cooling. > cheaper > near 8800GT stock clock performance when overclocked cons: >physically larger (requires a minimum of 9.5" of clearance in order to accommodate power connection) >8800 GT can also be overclocked, beating out the 9600GT by a fair margin. |

Honestly id like to hear what size monitor you play on and what rez you normally choose to play on. If its like only 1024x800 for example the 9600GT should be plenty.

man its a close call...id say the 88. Youre like right on the line...so flip a coin and just go with it haha. You honestly cant really go wrong either way. They will both fit your needs nicely.
im having a bit of trouble myself. It is the eve before i make my order. (yes i know im ordering on a friday, VERY STUPID IDEA!, but its my payday tomorrow haha). And im torn between a 98GX2 and a 88Ultra. The 98GX2 will be faster in say 90% of games where the 512 memory will be enough, but it will crap out and be worse then the 88U in games like Crysis @1900x1200 w/ 4AA as the Video memory will run out. The 88U doesnt have that problem because it has 768 vs 512 with the GX2. While thats a small problem now, I dont see video games taking LESS video memory over the next couple years. So the problem of if the GX2 will actually work well in the future gomes to head.
A few weeks ago this wasnt a problem because they had the 88U costing 100 dollars more then a GX2. Now like either today or a few days ago theyve lowered that price so that its 60 bucks CHEAPER then a GX2.
Ugh! no sleep tonight! haha. Time to flip a coin!

I'd say the 9600 GT is fine for 19" monitors yet the 8800 GTS 512MB can handle other res using a widescreen one.
Performance wise, the 8800GTS 512MB offers you a better one as the 9600 GT is more so the mainstream of Nvidia's 9 series. |
