Lurker turned poster here. Been reading reviews and suggestions for quite awhile now and am ready to jump! Still up in the air about desktop vs. laptop, but the 9800M GTX gets them a little closer and harder to choose. My main question is when will DS be getting the 9800M GTX and will it go into the 15's or just the 17's? Probably will end up getting a Desktop in the $3,000 range, so I'll post what I want, so you guys/gals can critique it for me, please. Ready to join your wonderful family.
Thanks for reading.

My concerns are Cosmos Vs. the 850SI, Memory, any overclocking plus other things I may have overlooked. I mostly play racing simulator games like rFactor, GTR2, GTR Evo and wanting to try iRacing. Also, the heavy hitters like Crysis FC2, etc...
Like to stay in this price range and have a 22" monitor, but maybe moving up to 24 or 25.5.
Thanks again,
Satyr

thats very nice, but I would drop one of the dvd drives.
drop Corsair and go with ocz, Corsair has been having issues and we have had lots of problems with them. add water cooling, and drop the sound card if you don't realy need it, if you need it keep it. oc the cpu and oc the ram ok how about this instead? here you go $3794, includes q9550 2.83GHz, includes over clocking, includes liquid cooling, includes 24" monitor, price without monitor $3245 Chassis: Cooler Master Cosmos S Edition Exterior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Interior Finish: - Standard Factory Finish Power Supply: 1000W Corsair HX (Dual/Triple/Quad SLI Compatible) Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 2.66GHz (1333MHz FSB) (12MB Cache) Motherboard: NVIDIA 780i Core 2 Quad (Chipset: nForce 780i SLI) System Memory: 4GB DDR2 OCZ at 1066MHz (SLI-Ready Edition) Card Reader: - No Thanks Hard Drive 1: 150GB Western Digital Raptor (10K RPM) (16MB Cache) (SATA) (Extreme Speed) Hard Drive 2: 500GB Western Digital (16MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA) Raid Option: - No Thanks Hard Drive 3: - No Thanks Optical Drive 1: DVD±R/RW/CD-R/RW (DVD Writer 20x / CD-Writer 48x) (LightScribe Edition) Optical Drive 2: - No Thanks Wireless Access: High Speed Network Port (Supports High-Speed Cable / DSL / Network Connections) Video Card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260 896MB TV Tuner: - No Thanks Sound Card: Razer Barracuda AC-1 (Recommended) Extreme Cooling: Liquid Chilled FrostBite CPU Only Internal Lighting: Blizzard Internal Lighting (Blue Edition) (Cold Cathode Tubes) Modifications: - No Thanks Boost Processor: Yes, Overclock the processor as much as possible with complete stability Boost Video Card: - No Thanks, Please do not overclock my video card(s) Boost Memory: Yes, Overclock memory timings (Includes Memory Fan Kit Installed) Tweak Windows: - No Thanks, Please do not tweak the services on the operating system Windows OS: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) (For Enthusiasts) Restore Kit: Digital Storm Specialized Recovery System (DVD Image Based) Protection: - No Thanks Office: - No Thanks Benchmarking: - No Thanks Install/Test Game: - No Thanks LCD Display: Samsung 24 inch (Widescreen) (Black) (High-Performance Gaming Display) Surge Shield: - No Thanks Speakers: - No Thanks Keyboard: Microsoft Multimedia Desktop 2.0 (Multimedia Keyboard + Optical Wheel Mouse) Mouse: - No Thanks my keyboard comes with a mouse External Storage: - No Thanks Warranty: 3 Year Platinum Care Extended Parts & Labor Warranty you can upgrade your card from a 260 to a 280 if you like and I recommend 4 year warranty. I would also recommend you search and see if you can get a better price for monitor some place else like newegg Edited by DST4ME - 10 Sep 2008 at 2:35am |

Personally, I would go with a mobo that utilises ddr2 if you can. That way you save big on memory and can put the cash into your cpu and graphics. It also gives you leeway for a sound card. I recommend a sound card to anyone using headphones because the digital artifacts that are often ultra sonic or even masked within audible levels can lead to tinnitus ( permanent hearing loss) at high volumes. Plus they make you irritable.
Okay, they make ME irratable...

Tinitus isn't exactly hearing loss. :P
Your rig looks pretty good. DST has picked out a good one for you, and I'd also recommend shopping for a monitor somewhere else. Will you just be running your Operating System on that Raptor? If you are, you could probably drop to a lower size and save some money. |

Cosmos has a lot of great reviews to back it up as a quality case for a gaming rig.
You can either go with whats been around for some time, old and busted 850Si, or go with new hotness that is cosmos s.
If youre into watercooling and the like, Cosmos S is one of the top cases for it, and affordable as well.
I wouldnt go with Corsair memory at this time, instead go with OCZ. Theyve been proven to be more reliable as of late, unlike Corsair. 4 gigs should be enough, but 8 gigs are better, if you dont plan to OC like a crazy mofo.
If you plan to OC your CPU i suggest to upgrade to a more reliable solution for it.
If you play at high resolutions you might want to look into having SLi/Xfire setup instead of a single card that you have now, but this will effect the price a your rig a lot.
I would also include a memory fan kit w/ or w/o OC.
I would downgrade to Windows Vista Prim 64 bit as well, save some $$$.
If you dont plan to run anything else on your raptor aside from OS, downgrade.
Also, worth mentioning a 4 year warranty is very, very attractive on an expensive rig.
PS: Looking back now, DST covered everything. Edited by Nomak - 11 Sep 2008 at 11:33am |
