Hey all

I've been scouring the boards here and doing plenty of research and well figured I'd ask a few questions before I start messing too heavily with the configurations.  I currently have a 5 1/2 year old rig that needless to say has problems keeping up with my gaming habit.  I generally play MMO's and have been in and out of a handful or so in the last year including Vanguard, City of Heroes/Villains, LOTRO, and WoW and probably a few more I'm forgetting.  I upgraded to a 24" widescreen monitor which needless to say is nice but didn't do my system any favors trying to run at 1920 x 1200 resolution.  I'm looking to invest in another rig that I'm hoping will give me in the neighborhood of 3-4 years of service with minimal upgrading if any.  So before we get there here are the questions....

1.  Should I be looking at SLI/Crossfire at my resolution?
2.  I plan on starting with 4gb of RAM so this should put me in the arena of looking at 64bit OS I would imagine?
3.  Besides the advantages of clutter and easy re-install if something goes wrong is there any other benefits to placing the OS on a separate HD?
4.  If I'm looking at having DSO overclock (not sure I feel comfortable yet doing myself) the processor will liquid cooling be heavily recommended or can I still use air?
5.  If I'm looking to "future proof" should I wait to purchase until after the nehalem release and consider that?  lets face it if I decide not to the price drop on current processors should be noticable

Thanks in advance for all the replies

1. If MMO is what your going to be doing on your pc i really doubt you will find much need for a sli/crossfire setup. MMO usually have some of the least intensive graphics of any games. If it turns out that sometime in a year or two there is something you need a 2nd gpu for then it will be far cheaper then to buy it.

2. Yes a 64 bit os will be what you want.

3. Will leave this question to others.

4. Ive seen quite a few people do nicely with the oc and stage 3 air. Adding the liquid cooling may help with the oc but there is never any promises.

5. Yes. If your very concerned with being able to update your rig then chances are waiting for nehalem is the best bet. The nehalem chips wont work in any of the current motherboards. So if you get a system now you would need to upgrade your motherboard to add a nehalem chip to it in the future.

Im fairly sure i also saw that the nehalem systems will require ddr3 ram also.

2. you only need to go with 64 bit for ram if you gonna go above 4GB, if 4GB is all then you are fine with 32bit ;)

if you gonna choose 64bit then choose it because of its graphic capabilities

3. life of your HDD could be longer due to less use if you give just your OS and apps, and use other HDD for high usage stuff, like p2p or games and etc.

you also won't lose all your personal files and data if you keep your OS and personal stuff separate.

its quicker to backup your OS HDD if its got less stuff on it.

4. for OC I would use liquid cooling, with fans you can get only so cool, with liquid you can much lower, this can help you in many ways.

5. Nehalem is about a month or so away, why not wait?

1. crossfire x or sli will show benefits at your native screen resolution. If you need to control your budget, you can do rather well with a single-card solution however. unless you plan on constantly leaving one MMO for a newer one which may be more demanding, it should serve you well... and if things need a boost, upgrade or get a second card.

2. Yeppies

3. Isn't that a good enough reason? Personally, I've had mostly single HDD systems and it's sucked every time I had to reformat!

4. Liquid cooling is more efficient than air cooling with very few exceptions. There are some poor examples of liquid cooling available as well as a few massive air coolers that do incredibly well.

5. Your point on the price drop is valid. The question is, are you willing to wait that long? Smile
