Hey guys,
I have a few questions about the ODE Level 1 system. First a little overview, I'm buying a PC to get back into flight simulations, mainly FSX but probably DCS A-10C and a few others too. I'm not a hardcore PC gamer so I'm not looking for anything too crazy and the Level 1 price range is where I want to be at. I might try out some shooters, but I play those on console with my buddies so it's not a deal breaker for me if I can't max out BF3 (I know the specs aren't even out yet, just an example). Now on to my questions. 1. The custom configuration lets you have the option to have non crucial items disabled in Windows 7, do the ODE systems come like that and does it really even make a difference for my application? 2. I've heard FSX is extremely hard on CPUs and I know you guys have experience with installing it, but I've seen recommendations to not install it on an OC'd system. They recommend overclocking after the installation to help verify stability. I have the game already so could there be any issues installing it and running add-ons (GEX, REX + OD, UTX) with the Level 1 OC'd to begin with? 3. Last, I know new stuff comes out all the time and I think the next batch of CPU/GPUs are coming out relatively soon so, to the best of your knowledge, are there going to be any changes to the ODE systems in the coming months that I should maybe wait for? I know this is basically a guessing game for this question, but I'm not in any real hurry so if something better is a possibly a couple months out, I could wait for it. Thanks for all the help I've found on these forums so far and I'm looking forward to finally getting back into the PC world! Thanks, Mike |

1. The OS Boost is regarded by many to make only a negligible difference in speed.
2. The overclock stability check that DS uses is pretty thorough and I wouldn't see why it would be unstable while installing FSX (though I never have, so correct me if I'm wrong). If you really need to, you can save the overclock to a motherboard profile, revert to default motherboard settings for the installation, and put your overclocked profile back on after the installation. 3. Next batch of CPUs to be released is Sandy Bridge-E, which will take the place of last year's Core i7-9xx series. That's high end stuff, and probably won't show up in lower level ODE's. Ivy Bridge is slated around a year or possibly earlier, and claims to have a significant performance boost over Sandy Bridge processors; you may want to wait for this but it's your choice. As for GPUs, I have not been keeping up with Kepler (GTX 6xx series), haha, but it appears that they might be coming out around Q4. I've no idea on what performance level order they'll be releasing that series though. Edited by ablahblah - 21 Jul 2011 at 1:59pm |
