I'm in the market for a new desktop computer. I'm not a big gamer, but I'll play every now and then. I rarely play online. I'm trying to get a computer that is fast and will not be completely obsolete in 2 years. I would like to be able to play games occasionally, but mostly the system will be used for videos, music, word processing, CAD, FEA, and sometimes all of those things at once. I'd like to get a 5 year lifespan (at least) out of my computer, and I plan to upgrade slowly along the way. Also, I've heard the customer service is great here, but I would like to not have to use customer service, if you know what I mean. Maybe I shouldn't be looking at a gaming computer website, but I like the fact that I can customize the computer, the computers are easy to upgrade, and I've had bad experiences with desktops from big corporations.

My biggest question is which processor I should go for. Should I get the AMD six-core and save a lot of money, or go for an intel i7 930 or something like that since it outperforms AMD. For my needs would I even notice a difference? Thanks for the help.

Budget: $1500 max (cheaper is better)
I don't need any peripherals
A little bit of gaming, mostly music, vidoes, CAD, and FEA, usually all at the same time. I want a computer that is fast and will not be obsolete in 3 years.
plenty of storage for pictures and music

tough bill to fit for 1500, check this out
if by "plenty of storage" you meant 500gb and not 1tb, you could shave off another $50

Eh, Theres nothing wrong with AMD processors, but they aren't great. They don't overclock nearly as well as intel, and don't have intel's hyperthreading. Cheaper? definitely.

Here's some benchmarks between Amd's phenom II quad cores, and the i7-920, both overclocked. I realize the processor in that build is the i7-860, but they overclock and perform very similarly.

I would recommend !enders build.

If I bump my budget up to $2000 what would you change to the suggested configuration. What kind of life span (before the computer is completely obsolete) do you think I would get?

One more thing, I just got a 23 inch with a 2048 x 1152 resolution. I'm assuming that the single GPU specified in the last configuration you sent is sufficient, but I just wanted to check.

Would you recommend a solid state drive? If so should I have a solid state drive for my "Hard Drive Set 1" and a hard drive for my "Hard Drive Set 2"?

definitely set one, as far as if you want one, thats your call. at 2k youre right at the line to fit in a 40gb ssd, so based on what the guide says, if you feel you would use it, go for it
