Topic: a new lumos Posted: 21 Jul 2019 at 10:26am |
It seems that my old X79 Sabertooth MB is going South. I have been looking at a new computer to replace my 6+ year old Dreadnought and when I retired a month or so ago my mother sent me a check and told me to buy a new computer. This is what I came up with. I have a GTX 1080 ti GPU, a 1 TB hard disk and more that two Sata SSds to use. I also ordered a 1TB NVMe Samsung EVO from another source. I have already sent the order in, but they have not sent out a stage one email, so I suppose I could change something if necessary, but I think I did it right. Please check and see for me.

Congrats on the new order Nomad, and congrats on retirement as well!
My 2012 ASUS Sabertooth X79 mobo is still running strong... Good you have salvaged some components to utilize in the new build. Yup...you did fine. You will really enjoy the Lumos case (I have one with the same CPU and mobo), and the RGB LL Series fans mean you can make the rig look very different anytime the idea strikes you with the Corsair iCue software. When it’s all together, your build should be a strong one. The only item I might tweak would be improving on the cooler...you could go with the larger Corsair H115i 280mm or even the stronger 240mm HydroLux Light...it’s basically like an AIO with a larger reservoir and a fill port to keep it topped off. |

Thank you for your input. I just felt the price of the Hydrolux Light was more than I needed to pay. I am only asking for a 4.7GHz overclock, so the 240mm should be fine. I still needed to be under budget.

Hi Nomad1970, Congrats on the new system. The reviews put that H100 as a very capable cooler (since its fans run a bit faster) and you should be fine with it. They are noisier than the H115i. Some people end up changing the fans. You should use your old case and build another one as you go. That Noctua is still a very good cooler. In fact, tests show (the test was with the D15) that it is comparable in cooling to the H100i and a lot quieter. Enjoy.

I requested that the cooler be upgraded to the 280mm Corsair, we will see what happens.

Always good to get the best cooling you can...+$30 should be worth a degree or two C...

Probably not as close as I should, many of us are not. But she is only 94.
