I wanted to keep myself to 2,000 dollars when i started making this but I decided I wanted this case evan though it put me seventy dollars over the limit. Other than that I was trying to make the most powerful computer for gaming / video editing and game design possible. Did I succeed?

Edit: I do not need anything but the tower, I have a 24 inch HD that I am going to use as my monitor and already have a mouse and keyboard. Also I am set on XP and the case i selected below, if anybody has a better build than please post it below.

Your config is nice, but I can't stand vista. Would a 64 bit version of XP suffice? Also Is the fancy hard drive neccissarry? It puts me way over my budget for less space.

listen you want vista 64 bit because it will use all the ram from the sticks and the ram from GPU, XP can't do that.

I have tested vista 64 and trust me when I tell you that you will love it and it will work better for you.

just so you know I'm an XP lover but the vista 64bit just give us more, so I can't deny facts

the HDD is a faster drive and worth the money, you can choose the digital Raptor 150GB if you like but both those are faster and worth the money.

but if its not the right time for you then go with what you like.

the way it work here is that you guy come and say what you like, I make my recommendations, you guys ask any questions you have and make the final decision.

hopefully now you know whats what a little better

please note, I am no expert in computers just a hack, but want to play PC games like many people.

I do not know why you 'hate' Vista, I don't have much experience but from what I can tell it's OK and if you are looking for a reason to get it would be PC games using directX 10 only for Vista and going forward (likely) next directX 11 and the one after that etc. will be on Vista.

Not sure if this is a valid reason but really what the heck you are playing games get the best OS that will help in that regard.

As for the fancy hard drive, the 300GB velicoraptor is twice as fast as the 7200 rpm drives.  It will load games quick and more important in-game sequences will be much quicker.

IMO you are looking for something better than just OK, I mean you don't want a store bought $1000 computer obviously you are looking at DS for a cut above and that will cost, so what I am saying if you are already spending $2K what's another $200 for really fast HDD?

From the reviews I decided to get the 300GB Veliciraptor and likely it's worth the price (for many).  Especially gamers.

As far as 300GB goes, it's likely enough, if you don't have a lot of storage needs like movies and tons of pictures, which I do so I went with drive 1 300GB VR and drive 2 500GB

I have an older computer but found 300BG total was enough provided you don't keep a lot of junk around.

my 2c.

I would try to stay with quad-core Intel but don't know if you can get that with the 300GB VR HDD and the 260 GTX video card for $2K.

others will have more advice that's just my 2c for me I'd get the best HDD, the new Velociraptor is the 300GB one, the older 150GB just called Raptor is not as quick as the new one.

sorry but who ever phil is, he is not well inmored, xp can't address your 4 gigs of stick and your ram from your card.

in a 4.5GB system, 4Gb ram, 1GB gpu ram, xp can't adress all of that ram. this is simple math, its not a matter of opinion, and won't change no matter who repeats that it does Ms themselves says that it can't, cause they can do the math.

The max limit is 4gb on XP 32...

Your personal hardware limit may be 3.5GB, 3, 2.5, or 2...depending on how much hardware you have taking up towards the end of that limit. Your hardware takes up address space too, it just starts from the 4gb mark and makes its way down. Every different configuration will use a different amount.

If you have 4gb+ on a 64 bit system, you (the motherboard) can map the address space for your hardware to a different area. IE if your using XP, and the max of XP 64 is 128gb, it starts at 128gb and works its way down. I really doubt it maps it that high, but it might. So as an example (however unlikely...) you had 128gb of ram in your system, you'd be missing the last 2gb or so, depending on your hardware, and in Windows, would only show 126gb or 126.5 or 127...or whatever.

in otherword if you have 4GB of ram and 1GB of ram in graphic card, xp can't use the whole 5GB of ram.

Vista can.
