You nailed it. Shipping damage with the heavy Noctua is the reason given for dropping it.

Correct, it's not worth risking it. It was such a high failure rate... not worth having customers wait for their PC to be built, tested, shipped and then arrive broken.
Plus, there are so many good all-in-one coolers that we offer and they require no maintenance and there are no risks of leaks. On top of all of that, the Noctua would block access to memory modules for customers. |

After having been a huge advocate of Noctua for years I finally ordered a new Lumos rig from DS, with an AIO cooler. I still like Noctua but AIO's have come a long way and I'm ready to play with something different.

Bob Dylan and John Deacon appear in the DS forums! Nice reference hoserator.
... I know it's a Queen song, but Deacon wrote it. Base players get to have fun, too! ... |

If DS still had the Noctua , that would’ve been my cooler. But, didn’t feel like modifying a spanking new build. Maybe down the road.

That's a good idea. Buy a Noctua and a tube of paste now as a spare and that AIO will never ever fail. Edited by hoserator - 15 May 2018 at 3:14pm |

I think those Noctua CPU coolers are more for individuals that know what they're doing inside the case and/or build their own systems at home.
I can't imagine those heavy coolers were designed by the manufacturer with the idea in mind that they can be safely shipped around on a fully assembled system without a high potential for damage. Regardless of all the large "FRAGILE" stickers, the shipping companies just see it as another box that needs to be moved from point A to point B as quickly as possible, even if it means damaging 5-7% (or more) of the parcels with rough handling to meet the bulk shipping deadline. They could increase the cost for a special care shipping and I think they would still handle the packages with the same carelessness. Personally I think these shipping companies should make it mandatory for their employees to work at sites like Johnston Island for a while. They would above all, learn careful handling and transport of packages and such for sure; especially since their health would depend on it! |

I was lucky, mine arrived with no damage. I will have to go with an AIO if/when I buy a new rig.
