I've got a new DS box I haven't been able to run yet thanks to all kinds of issues trying to get a monitor to use with it from Best Buy (I won't waste anybodies time detailing the nightmare of their customer service both in-store and at their internet site). I guess I'll go over Circuit City and see what happens to me there.

And then another kick in the teeth - I get home last nite and go to post pics of my new DS rig on this forum and I've got no dial tone on the Verizon phone service and therefore, no Verizon DSL / internet availability. After hours this morning screwing around trying to figure out how to get repair service from Verizon I found the only way to do it was call Verizon "billing service" and push a numbered button that indicated that I might not be able to make my payment - that got me a live body to talk to. I asked the customer service rep for instructions on how to deduct non-service availability days from my next bill. That got me transfered to a real live technician - cause it had to do with their future cash flow stream from me. Long story short, they were able to determine that the problem is on their end not in my condo unit but no service man will be out until Tuesday, September 2! So my long weekend to finally fire up the new box and get FSX up and running is now delayed for another week. I don't think you can run and install any software now days without a working internet connection to "validate" everything, starting with the OS and every other piece of software you buy. Of course these sorts of hassles are only foisted on legitimate buyers of said software, those with a sufficient skill set can probably hack their way around all the issues with pirated copies to use any software products they like without having to actually pay for any of them. Anybody catching the irony here?

The really infuriating part is when I went on line with Verizon (at my office -15 miles away) for service related issues they want me sitting in front of my computer (the one with the problem at my home 15 miles away, right?) to "troubleshoot" the issue. How do you troubleshoot an issue on the internet when you've 15 miles away because you've got no connectivity at the location where the problems is? And with no dial tone on my home phone I couldn't talk to a live service person even if I had a phone number to call. Am I not understanding something here?

So, next weekend will be 3 weeks since I took delivery of my new DS box. If I can lay my hands on a monitor and if Verizon should happen to repair "their" problem,  I may be able to turn on my new DS box and use it, not just stare at it.

The horror......the horror.......

I can't take anymore suffering tales going on in here....Cry

I know we have all experienced outages from service providers and they NEVER happen at a convenient time man. That sucks mucho hombre! I know your frustration. You order the rig of your lifetime and go through child labor until it arrives...and then there's no payoff due to circumstances beyond your control.

Sounds like a good weekend for Harley to throw that pool party...

Wait....if the issue is on their end as they say...then they should be able to quickly test the signal reception and transmission at the station to confirm. Then you can verify connectivity on your side...Y/N?

Well they already ran some over the line tests from their end and they told me they know the issue is on their end and they won't need access to my condo, BUT, it's a holiday weekend, so Tueday is the earliest anybody's coming even though the work needs to be done from the junction box back to them. This is not the first time it's happened and I don't live in a rural area. The complex has about 200 homes in it. I've been losing service several times a month since the start of this year and it's getting worse as time goes forward. Not weather related I can tell you that.

Two possible reasons:

1. People move in and out of here fairly often each month, many are here temporarily (mostly rental units in this development). Some were brought to the area by their employers, we have lots of large, big name, pharmaceutical and chemical companies in the immediate region and a lot of their execs get moved around the country like checkers on a board. Their here short term while old homes in other states sell, new homes get completed, etc. I was told by a reasonably reliable (and probably) knowledgable source (a member of the management staff here for the complex) that when this condo development was built 4 to 5 years years ago, the lowest bidders for installation of phone service lines and junction boxes, etc., both inside and outside the buildings, went to a subcontractor who also happened to have the lowest IQ. The boxes containing the multiple connections  for phone and cable TV service and who knows what else, (3 building of 8 units each per junction box I think), NEVER LABELED THE CONNECTIONS AND WHICH UNITS THEY CORRESPONDED TO AND THERE IN NO DISCERNABLE ORDER IN WHICH THEY ARE POSITIONED IN THE BOX. So when somebody moves in or out it's a guessing game as to what's being disconnected or connected and from which units.

or could possibly be:

2. Bandwidth, I'm not technically savvy about this one but I was told it's like airlines over booking. They sell more subscriptions for the service than they have the equipment and bandwidth (power?) to deliver the service to all of the subscribers they signed up. Again, I don't understand it but ya' know what? I don't need to understand anything, when they stop charging me monthly for the service I'll stop complaining about the down time.

And no, Harleyman, I don't have a cell phone, no need. I don't make but 2 or 3 calls a month from home and use the internet maybe 10 to 12 hours a month at home at most (and generally that time is for downloading patches to fix software glitches). I'm already paying $90.00 a month for a service I really don't use much that's having more and more failures. Spending another $50.00 a month for another service I probably won't use except to makes calls about the fact that my $90.00 service is down, I don't think so. Let Verizon provide me with free cell phone service if they feel that's what I need to do. Go with just a cell phone? I still have to buy an internet service and that will be more expensive without the phone service through the same company. Comcast? Their no better and way over priced on my TV service for what I get as it is. Satellite dish, complex doesn't allow them, I think they signed a contract with Comcast for some sort of fee in exchange for not allowing FIOS or dishes.

Anyway, thanks for listening to me vent. Boy, I feel better already. Who knows, maybe I'll get home this afternoon and it will be all fixed!

I'd best not hold my breath on that happening.LOL
