This is what I'm looking at.

Any suggestions?

2 questions. What is the XMS3 memory? Its cheaper than the Dominator, but what's the difference?

Also a general, probably dumb question about the two hard drives. I've never installed anything when there is two drives. Do the programs detect and prompt you for which drive to install to? Also, do you have to run your antivirus on both drives?

as for 2 HDDs, they will install your OS on the Raptor, when ever you go to install apps they will automatically want to install in the program folder of your OS how ever with most installs, you can choose where to install the app/game.

The Dominator comes with snazzy heat dissipating fins.  I am not sure that there is any actual difference with the memory.  More importantly, I was told by DS that the DHX modules were not stable with the i7 chip.  I initially had chosen DHX memory but switched to the XMS3 on the advice of DS.  Not sure why it is still in the configurator- best ask DS directly.

As for the antivirus, you need one program to scan all drives.

Thanks for the responses.

DST4ME, I understand the liquid cooling for a better OC. The downgraded GPU and onboard sound to hold cost down.
The hard drives I'm not sure about. I currently have an 80GB HD on my 6 year old Dell. Still have 36 GB of free space, so I don't store, well, much of anything I guess. My thought on 2 hard drives was to load all games and apps on the second, OS and antivirus on the first. That way when the OS corrupts the only thing I would have to do would be to do a fresh install of OS and antivirus. Nothing else would be affected. I originally thought of a 32GB SSHD for OS since that would be all that was ever on it but that seemed too small even for me. The 64 GB was more than the 150 Raptor. The comp is used for gaming, internet, and kids homework. I've never done anything on my comp to require large storage drives. I'm not really sure what I would store, digital pictures? I did get my wife a digital camera for Christmas. Knowing her, maybe I do need a large drive now.Ouch

Anyone else used 2 drives the way I'm thinking of? Work well, or not?

Ok let me clearup a few things:

the gpu is not really a downgrade, once you get the 260+, come back here and we can help you oc it, once oced its very close to the 280 gtx, so close you won't much difference if any, if you ever go dual 260+ in the future, then you couldn't tell the difference between 2 x 260+ and 2 x 280.

So not really a gpu downgrade, more of a gpu price downgrade yet still get the performance.

sound card can be added later for a better price also

when working with 2 HDDs, and use them the way you said, if the HDD1 goes bad with our os on it, any games or apps on the HDD2 will not work anymore.

the only things that will servive if your HDD1 goes bad are personal/media files.

the games you should install on HDD1 anyways, because the raptor is much faster and you want the game on the drive that has the fastest seek time, and that would be the veloci raptor.

now if you don't think you need all that space, then drop the 500GB drive and instead of the 300GB veloci go with 150GB veloci.

so it would be this:

here you go Ticket# 219166 --- Price: $3390 (To see this build click here)

Hmmm. So if the OS becomes corrupt on HDD1 then the games have to be reinstalled as well even if they are on HDD2? I understand the games wouldn't work if the OS is down, but once a fresh re-install is done of the OS on HDD1 wouldn't the games still on HDD2 still be there intact and working once the OS is up again?

no it won't be up again, when you install something, it adds registry keys to the registry which is a part of the OS on HDD1.

when HDD1 goes bad, all the info including all the regkeys are gone, when you reinstall fresh OS, the new registry is missing all the keys that the apps and games installed.

it is for this reason that you can always put your personal/media files on a different HDD and they can be fine if the OS goes bad, personal/media files don't need regkeys to run, apps and games do.

Big%20smile Ahhh, yeah. Ok, so a fast second hard drive isn't needed and in my case maybe no second HD at all. Cool, thanks.

Which is a better choice performance wise, a liquid cooled 920 or an air cooled 940? Both overclocked.

I'm really not looking for an aggressive overclock as I'm a bit nervous about them. I'd rather have a bit slower processor that works perfectly for years, then a fast one I have issues with for years. Ideally, if I could afford it I'd get the 960 and not OC it.

Id have to agree with DST4ME, There is alot of posts about people getting that processor to 4.0 with air..

So liquid should be just as good, i guess it all depends what kind of chip your getting because they all clock differently.

The liquid cooled 920 is actually a bit cheaper. But then I have to fool with buying and changing liquid. Doesn't it make it harder to change video cards and such with liquid cooling? I'm not a do-it-yourselfer computer guy. I'd just as soon never open the case.

From my understanding liquid cooling is very low maintence, you might need to add more liquid 3-5 years from when you buy it.

But its pretty easy to do especially since your going with a HaF case.

Oh and your just paying for your cpu to be liquid cooled not your gpus, so it won't have any effect on that.

It's easy to change the video cards if your CPU is liquid cooled. It only gets difficult if you actually liquid cool the video cards.

LC is fine and needs no messing with, you may have to change liquid every 3 to 5 years but that is not a difficult or extensive thing to do.

your cards should have nothing to do with your LC on CPU and the way DS is tight with stuff you should have no problems changing GPUs and such

I'm a noob - but I've read somewhere that it's good to have a second hard drive in order to verify a backup of your 1st hard drive.  Is this true?

what you want to do is get a fast HDD like veloci raptor for your OS/apps/games. then you get a second HDD for storing personal/media files. This way if anything happens to your OS drive, your personal/media files will be just fine.

now in order to save yourself headaches down the road, what you want to do is copy/clone your OS HDD to another HDD.

I have an easy guide for it here using Acronis

so at the end the best setup is looking at 3 HDDs

HDD1 = fastest HDD you have - OS/apps/games

HDD2 = regular 500GB drive - storage of personal/media files

HDD3 = small drive - uses as a clone of OS drive.

you have any questions just ask, post your ticket number and let us look at your config before you order so we can help you if there is anything that is not perfect.

Wow!  Thank you so very much for this answer to my question! I currently use Acronis TrueImage Home 10 because it was recommended by several tech-related websites and am glad to see that you also recommend it.

The gaming PC that you are helping me to configure in another thread will definitely need 3 hard drives.

Questions:
1) Would the 3rd hard drive need to be as large as the 1st one in order to use it as a clone (of the 1st one)?
2) I'm planning on having a dual-boot set-up with (Windows XP Pro & Vista Ultimate 64-bit).  Would this change any of your above recommendations?

1. HDD3 needs to be only as big as the amount of data you have on the drive you are backing up. Its also best that HDD3 is an external drive.

2. if you are going to have each OS on a different drive, then I would recommend getting a drive for each OS, but if both OS-s are the same drive then only one drive is needed to clone.

now remember I only trust and use the cloning process of Acronis, not the image backups.
