I've had my DS rig for over 11 months, no problems whatever. Thanks DS. Your the best!Rig is:
Cooler Master HAF 932 i7 950 oc'd to 3.99 GHz EVGA X58 SLI 3 Edition mobo 6 GB DDR3 1600MHz DS Memory 1000 W Corsair PSU 1 x 80 CB Intell SSD, Model X25-M MLC Edition 1x 1 TB WD Caviar (7200 rpm) Hard Drive (Model: Black Edition) 1 x NVidea GeForce GTX 570 w/1.2 GB mem. Extreme cooloing is Stage 2 air: Noctua NH D14 Extreme performance (This is a very large cooler!) Sound: Integrated motherboard audio I want to add a sound sound card; which should free up some processor usage for processor hungry games like Flight Simulater X. I don't play a lot of music or movies on this computer so I'm not sure I'd fall into the audiophile category for listening, though would enjoy a kick in gaming sounds. I'm so pleaseed with the SSD experience I'd like to add an additional 120 or 160 GB Intell 320 SSD to put games on. Your thoughts please on sound card reccomendation and thoughts on adding a new SSD. |

Add the ssd, great idea.
I'm no sound expert but there was discussion on the subject here Nice build, looks like you knew what you were doing, you got all the right parts me likey
but you sure that a sound card makes enough of a difference for you to notice? cause I think it won't, it was true in the past but I think with the current cpus, yours included, they are so powerful that this will not mean much, but then again, its also been a long time since I tested, so IMHO first check with somebody that lives close to you so that you can see for yourself the difference between the integrated sound and the sound card in the game, then if its worth it buy one. SteamBoat, how does your rig run with FSX? That is the only game that I play on computer right now and the new rig I am hoping it will run well on the new rig that I purchase soon..

I run FSX w/high graphics setting, it runs good on this rig. Few, if any stutters.

DSTME, thanks for compliment on MY choices. Actually it's you guys on the forum and DS which guided me to those choices. A pat on the back for all.
I am so very pleased with the rig. I've had it about one year and not so much as a burp from it. Even better, after a year of running, I don't feel the rig is getting obsoleted by newer technology! I'll point out that I chose the big Noctua cooler, w/dual 140mm faans, over the 120mm unit. I'm glad I went with the bigger unit because I was concerned about processor life since it's oc'd to nearly 4GHz. (Iplan to keep this rig for many years). Even in dead summer the processor cores never exceede 45 deg. C. Cool stuff. And the Noctua fans, being so large, run at a slower speed, practically noiseless! And, it seems, you may save me more money, because I'm having second thought on the audio card. My thoughts are along these lines....I play games which are processor intensive; FSX being one of those. I can't say that anything I play uses more than 2 cores (4 virtual); and the OS probably another, so I guess that still leaves a lot of processor left. Is that how it works? I have checked out the Intell 320 series SS drives. They are 2.5" drives. Do I need to buy an adaptor to fit this in my drive bay, or does it come with an adaptor?

I just picked up an Intell 320 Series 120 GB SSD at Best Buy for $170. It comes complete with cables, a 2.5" to 3.5" bay adaptor, mounting screws, and even a cute little screw driver. Tomorrow I will install it.
The neww SSD will be for games only, as Win 7 (64) is already installed on the 80 GB SSD in the original build.

Thanks for the update but keep in mind heat normally does not kill a cpu cause cpu will shutdown if it gets too hot, most times its vcore that kills the cpu, if you are above 1.4, your cpu's is going to be shorter, the higher up you are the shorter, at 1.7 its instant death, at 1.5 about a year, 1.48 about a year and half or so, below 1.4 it will out live your pc.

Well, I don't know the vcore voltage. DS did the OC, so I'm assumiming they know what they're doing.. (They do, don't they?)
With the system as described above, can you recommend software to read the various system voltages. I aint going in there w/clumsy vm prongs! Edit: Ahah! I found the EVGA utility disc and installed it. (I forgot about it!) Vcore voltage is 1,38. DS passed that test! I find comfort in the belief that my sytem processor running at 100 deg F will last longer than one running at 200 deg F. Is this urban nerd myth?

As long as max temp is below 85c (most times its at 75c or lower) your cpu will out live your pc, so now you are basically talking about whether it will out live the pc by 3 years or 6 years (13 year or 16 years), either way it won't matter cause it won't be running cause the pc it would be in would not be running.
use CPU-z and put the cpu under stress then check the "core speed" and "core voltage" you must put the cpu under stress otherwise you maybe getting ide vcore which does not count. I got my oc from DS with a 1.48 vcore, I had them lower it cause I didn't want to replace the cpu within a year and a half or so. Edited by DST4ME - 30 Dec 2011 at 2:19am |

Successfully installed and formatted Intell 120GB SSD. Ran Intell's ssd toolbox on it.....seems ok!
I will run stress tests on rig after the Holiday.
