I
have ordered an X17 Level 4 laptop and I plan to add a second hard
drive to supplement the included 120 GB SSD. What I have is a Western
Digital Scorpio Black, 500GB 7200rpm SATA II drive. This is a "bare
drive", i.e. no other components/attachments/manuals etc.
I am not too sure how to go about the installation. First, do I need some form of disk caddy? (I assumed not, but I could be wrong.) Second, will the following steps get the job done ... 1. Turn the power off and unplug the laptop. 2. Remove the battery. 3. Remove the cover from the second bay on the bottom of the laptop. 4. Slide the new hard drive into place. 5. Replace the cover and then replace the battery. 6. Plug the laptop in and turn it on. 7. After boot is complete, Windows should give a message that the drive is unrecognized and must be formatted, so just click "OK" to finalize the settings. Will that work? Do I have to make any BIOS changes (assuming that the new drive will not be my system drive)? Do I have to do partitioning, etc., and if so how? Thanks for any suggestions, Michael |

![]() Based on the picture, you already have a 2nd hard drive bay, so you don't need an additional hard drive caddy. In step 6, you would want to go into the bios to make sure that your 120 GB SSD is the first drive to boot on. In step 7, Windows should already have been installed on your Intel SSD. Now you just have to go to Windows Start Button then Computer then right click on your Local Disk D and "format" to NTFS. In step 8, I would recommend doing a SMART test on the hard drive you just added before you transferring stuff into it. You might receive a DOA HDD that you would want to RMA for a new one. |

Well, it turned out to be a little more complicated. No one mentioned that the compartment for the 2nd hard drive is underneath the optical drive! When I opened the compartment I was dismayed to find it "full".
I searched the web and found a picture of a Sager 8170 that illustrated where the compartment actually was. So, after removing a few screws I was in business. Also, after I booted up, the Device Manager saw a healthy new drive but Windows didn't recognize it and, most importantly, the O/S didn't offer to do anything at all about that. It turns out that you have to go into System Management | Disk Management and then the O/S springs to life and activates a wizard to initialize and format the disk. I think it might be a good idea for DS to include detailed instructions for how to handle this, since the availability of adding a second drive is advertised as a feature of the configuration. |
