Ok first off this has nothing to do with the rig DS is building for me atm (though I cant wait for that.

I have and old computer with a 320 gig hard drive that has all my music, videos etc on it...used it as a dowload machine for the past few years. With the new system on the way I want to get rid of one of the two I currently have. So I'm trying to figure out the best way to pull the 320 gig harddrive from my old gateway and put it into the rig im currently using.

Current rig has 2 74 gig raptors set in raid zero windows xp operating system.

Gateway has a 320 gig hard drive also on windows xp.

By adding the gateway drive what do I need to do?

Tweak things in the bios?

Uninstall the gateway drivers before I put the drive into the newer rig?

Once its in and working how do I get XP off the new drive without destroying the other stuff I want to keep.

The actual physical mechanics are no problem its the tech stuff I have problems with.

Thanks Folks

So long as you have appropriate SATA or IDE cables long enough to go from the drive bay to the motherboard connector and enough power, it should simply be power down, static discharge, open case, pop in drive, cable and power it, power up and enjoy your added drive, windows should just recognize it since it is already formatted.

As far as removing xp etc, just take all the files you want to keep put them in a folder at the root of the added drive and select everything else and just delete it. You no longer care about the os or drivers or installed software anyway.

Thank you Kleibor2, wasnt sure if I had to screw around in bios to make it a slave drive or what. If its that easy I'll make it my afternoon project.

a 320 gig drive should be new enough that the drive by default configures its slave/master settings automatically, the jumpers are usually described right on the drive.

But just as an aside, I have not had to set a slave/master jumper since the early nineties when putting in a drive :) 99.9% of all modern hardware does not need it.

I have been tweaking around with computers since 1980 or so...

I know alot about alot of things in computers, one of my weak points is over clocking... but as far as basic hardware installs,  internal PC wire management, replacing graphics cards and the like, I am an old pro :)

I have been keeping old rigs alive and kicking for years past their expiry because I am a cheap SOB and I tend to buy a new pc every 3 to 5 years, no more... so I tend to tweak and change and update and etc... I have even swapped out power supplies in the past though I hated to do it in the off the shelf boxes I used to buy I could not even fit my ham hands into them :)

This new 950SI case I have though... wow, I could practicly move in and sleep inside... I actually have room to work in there, it is like a dream come true :)

Course I socked in a 1000 Watt OCZ elite-x-treme in there from DSO so hopefully, my power needs will never outgrow that beast :) I hope.

Ok it recognized the drive, asked me to reboot, I did so.

Now I'm trying to search out my files and having zero luck, most everything was stored in my documents file then separated within that. Any advice?

Ok, I put my old drive into this computer. Everything seemed to have gone well. I had the old drive set up for myself and a roomate I had a while back. I go into documents and setting and it has the folders, his I can access mine I can not. I can see all the program files etc just cant get what I want out of it. Havnt deleted anything yet, worse comes to worse I'll put it back in the old rig and play with what I want from it.

Well I figured out one thing. I put it back in the old rig and could access everything fine. So I moved the folder with music to a shared documents folder reinstalled it in this rig and bingo access. For some reason the owner profile is locked when the hard drive runs on this computer, so I'll have to move everything im saving to shared documents and then copy to the drive in this rig then reformat the added drive. Seems like a weird glithc is all and nothing is lost so its all good just a bit more time consuming.

Glad you came up with a work around.

XP is kinda weird, sometimes files tagged with an owner ID not recognized get security locked so you can not edit or delete them.

Depending on the version of XP you have, the security tab on the properties for the problem folder could have been modified to allow you access... but your way worked just as well and works even with the security crippled XP Home OS.
