Topic: adding a side fan to ODEPosted: 24 Aug 2012 at 12:05pm |

ive been thinking of adding a side fan (probably 120mm), on the window of the case, to my ODE. the gtx570s arent that great at cooling themselves, and basically just exhaust a crapload of heat into my case. i want to add a side fan, right next to the gpus, to blow some of that hot air out of the case.
any tips on how to do this would be more than helpful. |

The ODE's side plastic window can be replaced with a mesh grill with mounts for 4x 120mm fans. DS sends the grill if its asked for during ordering, otherwise you can go to Corsair website and order one.
That link is for Graphite colored 600t. There is a seperate 650 D grill that might fit, but not sure. Check the accessory box for it or call DS. Not sure if they'll send it after, but can't hurt to ask. Good Luck. Edited by bprat22 - 24 Aug 2012 at 12:13pm |

just out of curiosity, what would be the best way to add a fan to the side window? Edited by redsoxfanatic - 24 Aug 2012 at 12:28pm |

If you mean the optional side mesh, then the fans just mount to the holes provided. I used the Nexus Real Silent 120mm case fans, DS12SL-12, but there are alot of great, quiet 120mm fans to use. If you mean the plastic window, then a real careful hole drilling with like a Dremel or Rotozip type device, leaving room for the four mounting hole.
EdIt.... Once the fan/fans are mounted you can hook them to mobo headers or even better, take off the right side panel, find an extra 4 pin Peripheral plug ty-wrapped in the harness and run it along the bottom to the other side for fans to plug into. Most fans come with a 3pin to 4 pin pass- through connector where you can chain the fans together and have just one plug to psu harness. Good luck. Edited by bprat22 - 24 Aug 2012 at 1:07pm |

I have the ODE3 and got the mesh screen after I got ny rig. I think I got it and just paid shipping for it. Check with DS to make sure. It does help with keeping my 570's a little cooler. No fans just the screen. When I pay games I turn up my fans using MSI afterburner to 85% and no problems with heat. Hope this helps

It will help, not by a huge margin, but it's worth it if you are going to be overclocking the video card.

so i opted to just upgrade the stock fans to start with. i bought 2 120mm noctuas for the CPU cooler, and 2 200m bitfenix spectre pro fans for the front intake/top exhaust.
ive encountered a problem.... the top exhaust fan seems to seize up when temps get high (around 80C). the fan motor is hot to the touch, and it literally will not spin, even when i give it a push. anyone have a clue what is going on here? ive tried remounting the fan as an intake, and the same thing happens after about 10 minutes of high temps. why would the motor be seizing up under high temps tho? that seems counter-intuitive in the way the product is supposed to work..... |

My only thought is that the top fan might not fit right. The stock fans in the 600T ODE case are 20mm thick and that fan is 25mm. Did you have to twist the fan in there or was it an easy swap. I never heard of a fan seizing like that and I'm wondering if the fan blades are rubbing just a bit on the fan cowling or the center fan bearing is shifted ever so slightly causing the fan to seize.
You also have to be sure of a fan when changing the stock one on a cooler. It's not just the size and airflow, but the static pressure the cooler needs to do its job. Fan blades are shaped to optimize airflow through certain units. Not saying what you have isn't right, I just can't say. |

Yeah I did have to kinda jam it in to get it to fit, as well as a few modifications with a dremel. Do you think I've permanently damaged the fan, or should it be okay to use somewhere that it actually fits well. I've switched back to the stock corsair fan, which seems to be working fine, I just preferred the cool LED the bitfenix fan had
I did make sure that I got the CPU cooler fans right though, the noctuas kick some serious butt |

Unless you twisted the fan I would think its OK. Push in on the center fan hub, where the bearing is, and make sure its seated and square. Another way to check would be to, if it comes with a 3 pin to 4 pin connector, while its loose outside the case, just plug it into a 4 pin perpheral connector from the psu probably ty-wrapped in the wire harness and watch it for awhile.
They are nice fans.

yeah, i just let plugged it into a 4pin connector, and ran it for about 20 minutes in a horizontal position. ran totally fine, granted it wasnt under high heat.
i may get out my dremel again, since the difference between the spectre pro and the stock corsair fans are huge, but i want to make sure that cramming it in there was the problem, and not the motor reacting to the heat. any ideas on how to possibly test that? was thinking maybe a hair dryer blowing on right on the motor, idk if that would damage anything though edit: so for a quick test i placed the bitfenix fan as an exhaust on top of the first grate on the 600t case. not in the case, just resting on top. the motor feels hot to the touch, and the fan is still seizing up. so i guess i broke it? i never really put a lot of stress on the fan when placing it into the case; i cut the corners down so that if i eased it into the case, it was a tight fit but it fit. kind of a bummer that i took a dremel to it, since now i cant return it lol Edited by redsoxfanatic - 01 Sep 2012 at 9:22pm |
