Is there any way to add a firewire port to a laptop computer that currently does not? I wasn't anticipating the need for firewire when I purchased this rig, but aside from this one limitation I could not be happier. I understand that this may count as one of the downfalls of not going desktop, but I'd rather ask and sound foolish than spend another $2,000 on a computer for one feature. If feasible, I am willing to pay to get a modification done. The chassis has USB2, USB3, HDMI, eSATA, monitor and SD.
Chassis Model: Digital Storm xm17 Laptop (Model: 5175) Display: 17.3 Inch (16:9) (Resolution: 1920 x 1080) (Glossy Surface) LED-Backlit Display Processor: Intel Core i7 2760QM (2.4 GHz Turbo Mode to 3.5Ghz) (Quad Core) (6MB Cache) Thermal Compound: Stock CPU and GPU Thermal Compound Memory: 8GB DDR3 1600MHz (Requires Intel Core i7 2630QM or Higher Processor) Primary Hard Drive: 500GB 7200RPM (SATA 3Gb/s) Secondary Hard Drive: - Not Available Optical Drive: Blu-Ray Player (Blu-Ray 6x) & DVD/CD Writer Wireless Card: Intel Ultimate-N 6300 Wireless LAN Module Video Card(s): NVIDIA GeForce GT 555M 2GB with NVIDIA Optimus Technology Windows OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-Bit Edition) |

I'm not much of a laptop expert, but unless you have an express slot (sometimes called a card bus) I don't think there's any easy way of adding firewire and the majority of new computers don't even have them anymore. The cardbus was a way to expand the capabilities of a laptop in the same manner of having additional PCI slots on the mobo in a desktop. With the advent of USB this option isn't found on all/most laptops anymore.
Here's an example of a card bus or PCMCIA slot ( better known as "People Can't Memorize Computer Industry Acronyms" ):
Perhaps someone else here is more familiar with laptops and has a better answer than A) get a new laptop or B) change device to be USB compatible.

I can't speak to your specific rig, but you can add an ExpressCard that gives you a firewire port. So I would imagine if your rig has an open ExpressCard slot, you can pick up an adapter card. They usually run around $30-$50 bucks. If you're not sure on any of this, you can also contact DS directly by phone, and I'm sure one of their agents would be able to confirm whether or not this is possible with your rig.
They won't let me post a link, but you can find them on Newegg. Anyhow, I hope that helps man. Good luck with your venture. |
